Default Long Bounce Times with 2020.12

Since updating, offline bounces take a long, long time to prep before bouncing (at the expected speed), then hang again for awhile at the end of the bounce. It's so long that realtime bounces are actually faster for mixes of a few minutes or less. Anybody else seeing this?

Can't complain much, though, as I've actually found 2020.12 to be the most stable and error-free version on my system in quite awhile.

Could it be a UAD issue? I have not noticed longer bounces, but I don't use UAD. I'm mostly Waves, Fab Filter, and other AAX plugs.

UAD does slow down offline bounces, but that has always been the case and this is something new. It's actually a minor annoyance, and since PT is running very smoothly otherwise I don't want to tinker too much. But if others are experiencing the same thing since 2020.12, it would good to know if it's a bug or a 'feature.'

Can you be more specific? What times are you pulling down. I just bounced a 5:30 song @ 6.7x speed

It's not the bounce speed that has been affected, but the long prep time before the bounce actually begins. It's taking up to three minutes before it starts, then when the bounce finishes, the bounce dialogue stays on screen for another period of time. The wait time is definitely affected by the size and complexity of the mix, but even on simple stuff it doesn't start instantly like it used to.

I guess it depends on how many plugs you have. If you're getting good bounce speed (disk write) but the bounce is taking a long to coalesce, that tells me there is read latency.

Try to get some metrics of your disk while you're doing the bounce. If you see high reads, it could be the plugs, or you may try trashing prefs...

I mostly run Waves plugs, but have a few UA plugs on a session now. As soon as I hit opt/ctrl/b - it fires the bounce immediately.

I have seen this when a Rewire insert plugin was present (used for Soundminer playback, not even part of the bounce routing). About 2-3 minutes prep time for the offline bounce. With the insert removed it starts to bounce instantly. Could be a similar plugin. Disable and re-enable them one by one.

Yes, any one outdated plugin may cause this. And obviously you would not notice if you did realtime bounces, until the blugin is so bad it stops bounce.

I do use Waves ReWire from time to time for Waves Tune, and I've got the current versions, but I'll check to see if it was in any of my recent projects.

But just to reiterate, this issue didn't appear until after installing 2020.12, it hasn't slowed the offline bounce speed, or caused any problems with realtime bouncing.

I had a big problem with this until I did this:
Uncheck this box in the Mix Bounce Prefs when you bounce a track if it's just audio.

Don’t use Pad to Frame boundaries. It’s literally only necessary if you are going between Pro Tools and Media Composer or another NLE that is frame-accurate vs sample accurate.
