Default PROTOOLS is eating MY imported samples!!!

Has anyone else suffered this:

I import an audio file, (specifically: short aiffs and wavs, thousands of which I made MYSELF over the past 15 years)
using "Copy on Import" etc,

and when I return sometime later to use the same sample / sound, it has been corrupted by something, and can never be imported again, let alone played by anything?

Thank god I have multiple back ups of my samples on unattached drives, but it;s really starting to PISS me off that these imported samples are suddenly rendered UNUSABLE ever again, after one use. The sample will not play and is rendered "Unreadable by Protools", when it was imported in my last session, or a coupla days ago!

Don't mean to sound conspiritorial or anything, but that's a major flaw for a PROFESSIONAL TOOL isn't it?

Or maybe this has all been argued here before and I missed it....

Your words would be appreciated...

Oh and bizarrely it's been happening to me ever since OS X - 6.1 thru to 6.7.cswhatever.

Happens both in TDM/Mix G4/ 9.2.2 and LE/002R/g5 1.8orig/10.3.7

Never had that happen before, and I import many, many samples.
I use the 'import audio' command from the regions menu on the right.

Well, that's just too bad for me!

I've tried using only the keystroke, only the drop down command from the Title Bar, and only the drop down from within the Audio Bin, and the problem remains the same.

It's damn weird to me!
