G5 Dual 2.7GHZ PPC PCI-X slots here, HD3 system here and definitely do not intend cross-grading. I posted many moons ago for Avid to bring down the cross-grade price and this fell on deaf ears. The cross grade price is just exorbitant to just continue using your current system on a faster computer. Will wait till new architecture is available or just hang on to my system as is.

Default Re: Poll: How many still using PPC?

my rig is listed in my sig line below

i'm holding fast for now

my dual 2.7 HD4 in magma is very reliable (only up to 7.4.1cs5) and handles my needs

for some reason from cs6 to the latest cs does not talk to my magma.

it would be nice if digi would support that

the magma works fine in 7.4.2 and PT8PE

being on the "cutting edge" does not serve my client base....

i do

with the tools i've invested in to help me get my work achieved.

if my mac went down today ...i'd just by another used 2.7 or fix the one i have

i'm keeping an eye out for good deals on on accell cards and more dsp is all i'd ever need at this point but right now i hardly ever run out with HD4....but HD5 or 6 or 7 sounds pretty good to me if the price of the cards is fair...i'd buy them

i continue to use 7.4.1 on the clock with clients in order to take advantage of my UA plugins which are great and much more valuable than any carrots that have been dangled so far by digi.

i did another experiment in 8.0.1 this week on a rap tune

hated it...especially doing drum editing

i moved the session back to 7.4.1 in tiger and all was warm and fuzzy.

the new GUI was not made for me ...that's for sure.

TRIX are for kids.

Still using my solid as a rock G5 Dual 2G, HD2 Accel, PT 7.4, OS 10.4.11, Apogee Rosettas, ProControl, analog summing, lots of plugz. The system just works, never messes up and 7.4 has pretty much everything that I need. Sure, it would be nice to move to 8, but it blows on my Mac, crashed so much that I never got anything done. So having learned my lesson the last time around (with Mix hardware) and very clear that I see no value in paying anywhere near that much for the cross-grade and also becoming acutely aware that my system has very little resale value, I'm thinking that I will just hold onto this system as it is, frozen in time.

Interestingly, and somewhat related to this... I got 2 calls this summer from producers wanting to be able to recall old sessions (as old as 1998). In the first case, we spent a lot of time figuring out what plugz no longer even existed and so therefore wouldn't be available, how to get the newer versions of other plugins recalling older settings, etc... all of that... a real pain in the ass. Some of the reverbs we just had to assign substitutes and wing it as best we could.

The 2nd producer had a better idea. He bought old hardware Mix plus plus and a G4 Dual 800 (I think), found a backup of his old system drive and for a pittance he is in recall heaven.

Cheers!

8 core and PCIe here.
Forced into the crossgrade due to the death of my old G4. Six solid years service with the G4 but still a painful crossgrade none the less.
I felt like Digi was rippin' me on the cards (my 3rd system/TENS of thousands $'s) but I had to do something.
The new system is rock solid. Basically crash free for months on end....... PT 7.4

Dual 2.0 HD 2 PT 8.03 Rock solid. As said if Digi would just let us know what there plans were with new hardware.I would feel much more comfortable with upgrading to a new system. As it is I can not justify an upgrade to pcie.

Two rigs... Both HD|3 accel, both PPC, both rock solid on 7.4.2. Unfortunately, pt8 is not a big enough carrot to lure me into an overpriced crossgrade or expansion chassis. I have a lot of experience with 8 and it seems fine other than the overview bugs. I think there are many waiting for the next hardware revision.

Yup. We also have a HD3 with a Dual 2.5 GHz PPC on 10.5.8, PT 8. Rock solid. It's a big shame that Digi/Avid has decided to pull the plug without a acceptable upgrade offer. Exchanging to PCIe and buying a new Mac will be approx. EUR 5000-6000. For basically the same - since we don't use a lot of native stuff.

Yes, we don't need it now, things still work. But man, am I going to be grumpy when plugins need to updated and we can't because we are still on 8.01. I hate these upgrade-or-die stragegies.

Keep support for PPC Digi - at least until there really is no other option aymore. Companies need loyal customers, especially in these times. You'll lose a lot of those when you go about this way.

HD3accel & G5 d2.7.... 8.0.1....
PT doesn't offer any advantage with Snow L, so no reason to
change things....
Can't see ANY situation where we would ever pay the current
(ridiculous) crossgrade fees...
