Default 002R - How Many Simultaneous I/O’s / recoding more than 12 tracks at once

Simultaneous I/O’s?

The Details on the 002r are a little sketchy.

I’m going to be recording drums, lots of drums, and I need at least 12 simultaneous inputs..

It appears that the 001 can handle 18, albeit in a convoluted way, the details on the 002r are less clear, can anybody enlighten me.

I would also like to hear people’s experiences when recording more than 8 inputs at once… any issues, what setup, how are you routeing??

Thanks

LB

the 002 has a total of 18 inputs, just like the digi001.

4 inputs with a mic-pre (but also usable as a line-input)
4 line-inputs

8 channels through adat-lightpipe
2 channels through spdif

if you want to record at a higher samplerate as 48 Khz, then your inputs are only 10, because the adat-lightpipe protocol only goes up to 48 Khz, and so you cannot use that with higher samplerates.

Issues to watch out for are little latency problems. The digi002 has a certain delay in its ad-converters, but maybe some other device you connect has slightly other characteristics, so you could end up with phasing-issues...

But you can figure out the difference, and move the tracks so they are ok.

the 002R has 8 analogue ins on the back.

it also has S/PDIF in and out, which is two channels (a digital connection, so you have to buy an external A/D D/A converter taht communicates with 002R via SPDIF coax). i don't know of cheap options in this dept off hand, maybe the Lucid AD9624 & DA9624 combo, which will total around $1,300. a very quality option is the Apogee Mini-Me + Mini-DAC, totalling about $2,000.

it also has ADAT optical in and out, which is 8 channels (a digital connection, so you have to buy an external A/D D/A converter taht communicates with 002R via ADAT optical). a cheap way to go about this is the ALESIS AI-3 (roughly $399), which is gonna be about the same quality as the 001. the most expensive way to go about this is with the Apogee AD-8000, which is over $4,000.

so a total of 18 ins and outs (8 analogue on the 002, 8 ADAT optical, 2 S/PDIF coax).

Just make sure you have some way of using those ADAT channels, otherwise you're stuck with just the 8 analog inputs. Something like the octapre or digimax would work (plus they have 8 mic pres). Look around, there was a thread about it recently that I was reading.

I have had a look, I think that the:

"Behringer Ultragain pro-8 Dital 8000"
(what a stupidly long name!)

http://www.behringer.com/02_products...A8000&lang=eng

for 196GBP or 250USD

Will be my interface.. I have a 16 channel Soundcraft Desk that I am using for (general) pre-amping but I'm also going to invest in a Tube preamp and a tube compressor (aslo Behringer)

If you are interested the links are:

Compressor
http://www.behringer.com/02_products...T1952&lang=eng

Preamp
http://www.behringer.com/02_products...T1953&lang=eng

I am impressed with the behringer stuff.. I've spent over a year in and out of a studio that has an SSL 8000 and is mainly analoge.. Almost all the outboard stuff is Behringer.. Never had any problems with it.. and it's relatively cheap!

Also make sure you have a good computer.
No sense even trying to record 12 tracks at once if the computer cannot handle it.
