Do firewire cards work with PT?
I recently purchased a PT24 set up, with a 9600/G3400 and will be adding a Mix farm in the near future. It comes with 1 17g internal scsi drive, and I was wishing I could just use firewire drives, since they're cheaper, and I could use the space. Does anyone out there know if using a firewire card in the 9600 will work well enough to be worth getting into? Thanks!

Where does one find a complete for clean-install (IE: not upgrade) copy of OS 9.2 these days? I need one of those. I just bought a FireWire drive, but I'm using OS 9.0 on a second-hand G3, so upgrading to 9.2 isn't an option...and upgrading wouldn't qualify as a "clean install" anyway, would it? Thanks in advance! |

Re: Do firewire cards work with PT?
I have a 9600 G3 500/250 and Mix Plus system with the Orange Micro Firewire/USB card and it works well. I had to exchange my first Orange/micro card because it had the older/slower NEC chip on it. The one I have now has the "Agere" chip and works well.
The Sonnett Tango has been reported to work in the 9600 with PT Mix systems as well. Very plug and play apparently. The key is to use the firewire drivers from OS 9.2 OS 9.2 is not compatible with the 9600, but you can install OS 9.0.4 or 9.1 and then install the firewire drivers from OS 9.2, but be sure and remove old firewire drivers, and use only the Mac firewire drivers and extensions, no third party firewire extensions or drivers. The mac OS 9.2 drivers are the best! There have been several threads re: this very topic, so try a search for firewire and 9600 or something like that.

Re: Do firewire cards work with PT?
Here's more info on firewire cards and pro tools.
http://duc. digidesign.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=16;t=012935 I believe you can buy OS 9.2 directly from Apple on their website.

Re: Do firewire cards work with PT?
Thanks for the help Karen..I'll try to hunt down one of the Orange Link FW/USB 2.0 cards. Hopefully it doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and I can get this all together.

Re: Do firewire cards work with PT?
Allbaldo,
Make CERTAIN that the Orangemicro has the "agere"chip, and not the NEC. Otherwise go for the Sonnet Tango, it's $89.00 and many here have reported their successful with it. Good Luck, I enjoy my firewire everyday. Karen.

Re: Do firewire cards work with PT?
I use the Mach Fire from XLR8 on my 9500.
http://eshop.macsales.com/Cata log_Item.cfm?ID=3593&Item=XLRMFPCI Haven't had one bit of trouble using it with OS 9.1 once I figured out I needed the 9.2 drivers. In fact, in my whole life dealing with computer recording this has been the easiest installation ever. anthony |

Re: Do firewire cards work with PT?
I recently got a very inexpensive firewire card for my beige G3 300MHz Mixplus system (not sure of brand). I have the latest firewire extensions, but PT always crashes when the firewire extensions are enabled. I have to disable the extensions to run PT, then enable them to do a firewire transfer from my SCSI drives. Should I be able to use a firewire card and this PT setup at the same time? Anyone else doing it?

Re: Do firewire cards work with PT?
I forgot to mention, in my last post, that I'm using my firewire card in a slot of my SBS Bit3 expansion chassis. Is anyone else doing this, or does the card need to be in the CPU? Unfortunatley my CPU's slots are full.
