Default Punch In Recording - Lose Underlying Clip(s) Detail

Before I begin, let me be clear that this is not a playlist issue. I am aware of using auto created playlists during recording and that option is turned on.

I'm a former Cubase guy and I'm slowly making my way into ProTools. Currently, I'm using Pro Tools to record vocals. I'm in Quick Punch mode so we can capture small re-takes of the vocal parts.

The problem is that when a new clip is recorded and I peel back the clip, the original clip(s) details are lost (see attachment image). This creates a problem if I only like the first few seconds of the new take and want to keep the original clip(s) details as they were. For example, if the original two clips had a crossfade, the crossfade would be destroyed. How can I fix this problem??

I think there is a setting called "layered editing" but not sure which drop down menu it is in off the top of my head. but that looks like the setting you're experiencing. with it on or off when you "layer" a new clip over an existing one it will either preserve the pre-existing clip or do what you see which is trimming that portion of the pre-existing clip

Thank you, thank you! Layered editing turned on fixed the problem.
