tips recording with an electronic drumset?

Hey,

I just bought an electronic drum kit (yamaha DTX) and I'm confused about how to record it with MIDI and then use a program like BFD to edit each drum separately. The people at guitar center aren't too clear about it. Anyone able to give me specific advice on how to do this?

There's lots of info available online... I'd recommend reading both the DTX manual and the BFD2 help as well. Each kit has its own way of hooking up, but in the end... it's basically the same as setting up any MIDI device.

If you're using it with BFD, there may even already be a preset for your kit. Otherwise, it's just about selecting which hits correspond to each channel in BFD. It's pretty straightforward.

then open BFD 2 in standalone and you can begin mapping a kit - so your kick plays the kick on the screen - ect ect

There's a DTX Keymap for BFD2 as well as a preset for the DTX on the FXpansion forum. You'll have to experiment with Pro Tools and your I/O to see if you can run at 128 or less samples of latency though...

The mapping in BFD2 is about as easy as anything I've ever used computer-wise. The only problem comes when trying to map various hits on a kit piece and your ekit doesn't have enough pads Ran into that when mapping BFD2 to my Yamaha DTXM12 - I had to pick the hits in BFD2 I really needed and let go the rest.

With my Roland TD10 kit, SD2 and EZ drummer triggered almost perfect, right out of the box(only had to change the midi note for a pad so I could get a cowbell or sidestick on it). Addictive Drums had a Roland preset and that was great as well. Just put up a stereo Instrument track with the drum VI in the top slot. You can also use a hybrid approach to add more "air" and realism by; use a real hihat(with mic), or use all real cymbals(hat mic and 2 overheads, which adds a lot of "air" to the product) or even use a real snare. Assuming you can also split out all the sounds(from the plugin) to separate tracks, you can also use AUX sends and feed a room reverb of your own(making the final result sound a little more "you" than BFD). There's lots of fun to be had here
