Default Vocal Tracks

I'm new to recording and mixing vocals. I'm trying to get that thick chorus effect on the chorus.
I doubled and even tripled the track, just sounds louder, I want it to sound like two people.
Should the second track be slipped behind slightly? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Little delay and detune the second track. Better yet, record second and third vocal track. Also Run vocal tracks thru outboard chorus unit. Lexicon MPX (pgm 89) sounds good.

Lost Time, thanks for responding, let's say I have three tracks. Do I process all three or jus the second and third and leave the original as is?

Make a copy of the track. Then shift/nudge the copy slightly forward - or - use a delay plugin.

Repeat with a second copy of the track.

Should give you a rich, full sound.

Keep in mind that the listener has to have a feel for what the vocal part is doing. This means that he has to hear, in the vocals, a clear representation of the words and melody. Keeping this in mind, treat the first, the main vocal track like a normal lead vocal track, and process the others. If everything is altered, then what is left to lead the song?

try this:

1) make four (!) copies of your vocal track
2) pan those tracks something like -10,-5,+7,+12 (quite close to the lead track)
3) delay those tracks a little (something between 5-15ms), give each track different delay
4) detune those tracks a little (something between +/- 10 cents), each track differently
5) group those tracks together and apply effects if desired

that should be quite close to what "doubling" plugins are doing. of course it will sound better if you just make the singer do many takes and put those performances together. can't beat the real thing, can you

Use a chorus plugin or an outboard hardware effect umit. Simple and effective.

wanted effect was to make lead sound like "two" people, and chorus doesn't do that. though that is easy... i had the impression that the wanted effect was more like "doubling" than "chorusing", because it was said the lead should sound "like two people". my last post is about that and what you do if there's not a dedicated plugin available. (i know waves has a great doubling-plugin, but it's not available individually.)

How do you detune? I can only detune in Autotune. What are you using?

You can use the pitch shift plug-in in the Audio Suite to detune.

BTW, if it is really critical to make it sound like there are two people, couldn't you just have the singer overdub his/her vocal track? that would sound much more like two people than any "effect" could do.
