Thanks! Is there any update on it? Avid customer service never replied to my email about the broken replacement unit.

I was having issues with the 4th knob on the Avid S1 constantly writing Pan Automation, or at least attempting to. I noticed that the knob was pushed down on its post to where it was actually making contact with the surface of the S1. Therefor it was translating any minor vibration into the knob, that then started reading as movement. Once I pulled the knob to where it was no longer making contact with the surface, I have not had the problem.

The fabrication of the top plastic on my S1 was not perfect, so it is higher near that pan pot knob. Making it be the only knob with that problem.

I assume this won't be a fix for everyone, but I thought it worth mentioning. Maybe it can save someone a lot of hassle. If you're still having an issue, Deoxit contact cleaner might be an option to clean the pot. I am not a licensed Avid specialist, but that is one of the things I tried. Just follow the instructions on the Deoxit can.

There was a legitimate issue with the first batch of S1's and knobs writing(mostly knob4). It was in the circuit. I think your issue is different if it has gone away now.

Is the replacement programme still running? I've just bought two used S1s, both with this exact issue on knob 4.

Yes, but its return to base unless it's under warranty. Just start a case with Avid.

Arrrrgggghhhhh ! Here it goes again !

The only S1 we didn't exchange, well i think it's it, just began to do the faulty knob automation problem yesterday.

Today, the problem became very very obvious.

It was quite easy to repeat the problem as when i bank over tracks, the knob begin to write automation without any intervention.
I made two videos, and sorry for my bad english !

The first video you can see the fifth knob turning to automation when i bank over 8 tracks.
And in the second video, you can see that the problem can also occur, when you bank just track by track, and then you can have 2, 3 or 4 knobs automation to be on, but you just didn't touch anything...

I will open a case. One more time, hope this is the last time !

Hi Eddie,

Does this mean that, if out of warranty, we pay the cost to repair or is it covered as a manufacturing fault?
I got a used unit from one of the first batches with a proof of purchase from 2020. And i got quoted $719.95 +shipping to have it fixed.
Just wanted to double check the RMA team was following the right policy for this issue.

Thanks

Please give me your case number, for this issue it is a much lower out of warranty repair cost. Customer Service should have flagged it to our repair department. I can get them to re quote you with the correct amount.

Hey Eddie,

I have an S1 that is doing the same thing on the 4th pan knob. I bought the unit secondhand through Reverb and while the unit is in great condition unfortunately the 4th knob is flickering and being a total pain.

I've been a loyal customer of Avid for over 20 years and subscribe to the Ultimate Pro Tools subscription package. I was absolutely shocked when I reached out to Avid today for a repair estimate and they quoted me at $893.30 plus shipping and handling to fix one knob! You've got to be kidding me. I mind as well buy a whole new unit for that price.

This is so infuriating that a company who makes an inferior product won't stand behind their gear. It's not like it's a few of them here and there, it seems like a consistent problem throughout the early batches of S1s. I'm just in shock right now. Yes, I'm obviously pissed that I bought the unit secondhand and understand the warranty piece but where is Avid's loyalty to the end user. This is their faulty product. It's like when a car has a recall because there's something wrong with it and it gets fixed free of charge. What a disappointing company.

Pete
