Default Can\'t save patch change...help

I click on the P button on the channel strip in the mix window. It brings up numbered patch list. I click. Patch changes. But when I pause or stop session it defaults back. Command save option does not save.
Do I have to make the change in the MIDI Event list to make it permanent?

and yes, I am sending the signal to the same Alesis QS-6.
