PT 9 Crashing!
I just upgraded my Mac Pro 2x2.66 MHz Dual Core, Intel Processor, from Leopard to Snow Leopard to crossgrade from PT 8 to PT 9.
PT has been rock solid over each upgrade until now. First my firewire drive has disappeared from my desktop and now PT 9 crashes repeatedly during simple function commands. I get no warning of errors or anything. Can someone please advise. I hoping it's a user error and not PT 9. I'm in the middle of completing two projects. This is a real buster! Re: PT 9 Crashing!
advise: you will need to post all your computer system info otherwise how can we know how to help you. if you notice my signature has all this info in it. you can do this in your profile
advise: never ever upgrade or update during a project. if you do, always build a new system on a new drive so you can revert easily. sorry if i am stating the obvious cheers john

Re: PT 9 Crashing!
You guys aren't posting enough information, most importantly, what steps did you do to try and fix it yourself. Unless you've done these steps in particular, I wouldn't even post something yet. In my opinion, these are the mandatory first steps to try and fix PT any time you're having problems. I'd do them in these order, and stop once it's fixed, so starting from easiest to hardest:
1) Delete the Databases folder located in Library-Application Support-Digidesign. Erase it and then restart. For me this is the biggest cause of crashes, and erases it is my first step. 2) Repair Disk permissions. Restart. Actually I find running something like Cocktail, or Main Menu, really useful, as it performs a whole suite of maintenance things, and then restarts. But permissions is the key one. 3) Erase the following files from within your USER-LIBRARY-PREFERENCES folder, and then restart: DAE Prefs (folder) DigiSetup.OSX Pro Tools Prefs (called Pro Tools HD Prefs if you're still on PT8) com.digidesign.ProTools.plist 3) Re-run the OS 'COMBO' updater for the OS version you are on. It MUST be the combo updater. Like 10.6.4 Combo Updater. 4) Use the ProTools uninstaller to uninstall, and re-install PT. This will often fix a system as well. If you haven't tried those things, please try them and see if they help. PT9 has been rock solid for me so far, on a clean install of 10.6.4. |

Re: PT 9 Crashing!
Look at the crash report and see what thread it is crashing on. For me it was crashing when attempting to load my old Melodyne Essential. I went to the Melodyne website, downloaded the latest update, reinstalled it, and Pro Tools 9 loaded and works fine now.

Re: PT 9 Crashing!
It actually tends to crash while attempting fade edits or clip edits in the edit window.

Re: PT 9 Crashing!
I have same problem with Protools 9 crashing. I can bounce 1 mp3 to disc, then it freezes. I can still save and quit, but no other functions work, so I reboot, make 1 more mp3 and reboot it again.
If I open a song made in Protools 8, it plays for abot 2 seconds then freezes. I'll try the routine put up by TimNielson and report back. |

Re: PT 9 Crashing!
Just got the 2nd mp3 bouncing to disk without quitting between!
My disk permissions seemed very messed up - maybe that was the problem. |

Re: PT 9 Crashing!
It worked for a while using my digi002 rack, but when I tried without the hardware there was the same problem. I've reinstalled everything (including a 10.6.4 combo update) and its still the same except it won't recognise my 002 rack anymore.
The support has been appalling. I still haven't had a reply from my original query on 16 nov except for acknowledgement of receipt. Today I got a reply from a support request asking why I hadn't had an answer telling me I hadn't registered for support (not true) I tried re registering and the form refused to see that I had selected a country, so asked for a new password (again) even though my old password wouldn't work to login I wasn't allowed to use it again. I don't know what's happened to Digidesign's systems since its all under Avid, but it doesn't work. I'm now stuck with software that doesn't work and no way of getting an answer from support. Apparently I have one telephone conversation free, but I'm wary of using it at this stage because I'll probably be told that that's m,y lot. Thanks Avid!! |
