Digi has added the exchange section to their site but still nothing on trade ups for us 001 users. I guess we can assume their won't be one.

Re: Still no trade up for the 002?!
Digidesign has publically stated that the Digi 002 is a NEW product, and not a REPLACEMENT for the Digi 001, and therefore, there shall be no trade in / upgrade path. Your best bet is to sell your Digi 001 and then buy a Digi 002 - if that's the device you want.

Re: Still no trade up for the 002?!
I would assume there won't be an upgrade, historically they've only had upgrades to/within the TDM systems.

Re: Still no trade up for the 002?!
It seems like the Digi001, Toolbox and Mbox are all LE versions of the Protools|24 Mix systems and the Digi002 is the LE version of the Protools|HD systems.
Digidesign offer trade up from LE - TDM and have done for a while but offering and LE - LE trade up doesn't sound realistic. In the UK the digi002 is £2,199, the equivelent of $3,396 including V.A.T. That's put me right off even if I had the money. The software bundle and hardware spec are so good that it's like they've given you the control surface for free. Not in the UK though, It's simply not worth paying the extra, it should be £1,899 at the most. £300 is still a lot of money even if you think about it relatively and not offering trade ups within the LE range is a little bit unfair. I'd love to be able to buy a Digi002 when the prices have come down to under £2000 and then be able to trade in my Audiomedia III card for some kind of extra discount and I'm sure everyone with a digi001 feels the same. There is 1 issue though. The digi002 uses ADAT and SP/DIF for 10 of it's I/O ports. That limits you to 48Khz straight away so if you were buying it for that you might aswell get a motormix or something and keep the digi001. |

Re: Still no trade up for the 002?!
it's a shame they dont offer an upgrade. it's very hard to justify a additional very similar product into what is relativly the same market segment. I could see digi taking trade in's then selling them bundled with plugs for education/refurb market. How many people honeslty trade up to HD? And a offer to upgrade to what will most likley last only another software rev is pretty lame. Mix and refurb mix technology is old tech these days. Theres no going back.
I'll add here that at the time the 001 was released there wasn't a mbox or digi002 (obviously). But at that time as is the case now there where upgrades for the 001 and I think AMIII card owners. The Digi001 is going for about 700 bucks now, well under half the cost of the digi002- to me the digi002 would be an upgrade not a sidegrade. But hey, who gives a **** ? They don't want my money- thats fine by me.

Re: Still no trade up for the 002?!
Just sell your 001 on eBay or something...you can still get a decent price for them. It would be handy if Digi offered a tradeup since they do for their higher-end systems, but at the same time, most manufacturers don't offer any sort of trade-in policy at all...

Re: Still no trade up for the 002?!
I try to look at it this way. I buy gear that I hope will pay for itself a few times over before I need to replace it. Sometimes it falls short of that, but if I can still make money with it, its not losing me money. If I need to bite the bullet and upgrade before my existing gear has paid itself off at least once, then I ask myself if the new gear will somehow compensate for this. In the case of the 002, I don't see that it will. I can do virtually all the things an 002 can do, so I'll wait until the price comes down before I consider buying one.
The people that "need" the latest and greatest toys on the block are the ones who pay top dollar and are first to complain about how fast they became obsolete...its a vicious cycle, isn't it? dave patterson / knobville |
