Default noob needs help with 002r and Apogee Rosetta 200

so i bought an Apogee Rosetta 200 under the impression i could still use the 002r mic pres, but a guy at Apogee says otherwise. whats the word? id love to hear from some users who have upgraded the converters in their 002-based studios. thanks all

If you use outboard preamps, you can go thru the Apogee.
The built in pre's in the 002r have to go thru the internal 002r convertors.

Hi,

Clocking the 002R to the Rosetta should make your internal preamps/convertors sound better overall. The increased resolution of the Rosetta's D/A conversion will improve your monitoring potential. But, like Don said, you'll need to feed the Rosetta A/D an analog signal--the 002R pres run direct to the internal convertors. Fortunately any external pre, DI instrument, line signal, etc. can take advantage of the Rosetta's convertors on its way into Pro Tools.

hey guys thanks for chiming in. of course i planned on getting external pres pretty soon but i guess its gonna be sooner than later now.

regarding the clock, yes i did plan on clocking to the Apogee of course, right now ive just got a pair of optical cables going to and from the 002r and Rosetta... so i just change it to ADAT in Hardware Setups and im clocking to the Apogee, right?

thanks again, in not new to digital recording but to converters.. total noob

Yup, Digi hardware clocked to ADAT external-Rosetta clock set to internal. Should be a sweet set-up. Compare the Digi pres clocked internally to clocked by the Rosetta, You don't even need a sound source, you might hear the diff. in the noise floor if you listen back carefully. Nice improvement...

Is it possible to monitor with no or low latency in a setup where pres go to Rosetta 200 spdif'ed into the 002?

hey this is a good question. I tracked for the first time with my rosetta 200 last night but i monitored through my 002r. i thought that i was going to come here and ask this myself.

well, its been an expensive couple of days, but im now the owner of an Apogee Rosetta 200, and 2 Joe Meek OneQ Mic Pres

right now im monitoring from the Rosetta, and it sounds great... between that and using the clock, i wanted to throw a welcome back party for my high end! ive got a question tho, how do i control playback volume? yea ive got the audio going to a Master fader in PT, but what about when i bounce or mix? i dont want to think about having to buy a Central Station or Big Knob... are there other choices or solutions?

my next question is do i use the Analog Outs of my Meek Pres or Pod XT Pro and go into the Analog Ins of the Rosetta? i wonder because isnt that a triple conversion? obviously the POD and oneQs are not tube circuits, they are digital, so im assuming you hit a A/D converter in each unit, then a D/A when you go Analog Out.. going to the Rosetta then would be a 3rd conversion is how im thinking. if anyone knows for sure, please chime in!

Seems like a bad choice to get the Meeks if you had invested in the Apogee.
You paid for a low quality channel strip with cheap digital converters after you had taken the time to purchase the Rosetta 200?
It's just the worse kind of redundancy since you purchased the Rosetta first why look at a channel strip with digital if you had the Rosetta?
Seems like a waste because the digital is lesser quality than what you had already at was a factor in the price of the Meeks, but if you think it sounds good then good for you.
If I were you I would take the time to plan and research my movements to make them mess together better into my overall goal and plan.
Nothing worst than throwing good money after bad or buying twice.

Well, if he likes the sound of the Joe Meek channel strips, he can just use the analog outs, and ignore the builtin A/D.
