Default Re: How good are seagate drives?

I've always used WD, but just got a new Mac Pro and from TransInternational, they had some great deals with Seagate's and I did a ton of research, asking other PT users, music stores like WLA music and GC and by FAR Seagate was always recommended.

Not to thread jack, but I'd like to know, can one use a 1T?

I've noticed the bigger the drive, the bigger the seek time and I think digi recommends 8.9 or less?
and 750gb have 32 meg cache, but the 1T have longer seek times.

My question is are 1T drives too big for sessions that are running high track count, plug-ins, video, etc?

Glyph http://www.glyphtech.com is a company that produces high end a/v drives.

As for macsales, I have had no problems with them. recently bought a 320gig buss powered drive with a 7200 rpm speed for 200 bucks. that was in my opinion a good deal compared to the quality of the enclosure and drive.

Just out of curiosity, how is buss powered hard drives working for you. I almost always have the notebook connected to a power source so it isn't a big deal but in the event I want to run without pluggin in, what happens to battery power times. I wouldn't want to run out of power while bouncing to disk. Also I'm assuming the buss power is sufficient to run the drives well (at 7200 RPM) otherwise they wouldn't make it, right. Am I just worried about nothing?

I've always had great service from OWC (Other World Computing), and have had really bad customer service with Glyph.

I've been using Seagates to record audio since before PT was PT. The Seagate Barracudas with the Oxford chipsets are their latest.

It appears that OWC does not put Seagates in their external enclosures anymore, but they still have several Seagate drives available.

I enjoy the buss powered drives... I get about 2 hours of time with them plugged in on a macbook pro purchased in august. but I rarely use my laptop for recording without a plug near by.. you never know when you might need to plug in.

It is just that with a buss powered drive you are only needing to plug one thing in rather than 2. So I always go with buss powered drive if possible.

Thanks for the info. My next external drive will be buss powered. Is is just less tedious to connect and setup to start using right away.

Michael, glyph make the expensive high end firewire enclosures that are qualified for Pro Tools. They put Seagate drives in to their enclosures.

In terms of their externals, I know a few people who have used Seagate FW drives in Pro Tools very successfully. I know a few using the FreeAgent Pro drives at huge sizes (750 GB, mostly), and a few of them use the older external drives (the big rounded cube).
