Default Latency between left to right outputs

I have just started using PT M-Powered 8 with my fast track pro.
There is and acute playback problem - mainly latency between the left and right outpoots. But also dropouts and distorsion too.

What I tryed doing 'till now:
I played around with the playback engine parameters in every possible way.
Tryed changing the USB cable/headphones/and even brought over a similar sound card which still had the same problem.

Any help will be appriciated!
Mike

How did you test this?
I would like to test it on my own system to see what my results are.

Edit: The Latency between channels, not the distortion or dropouts.

I just tryed working a session on an external USB WD 7200rpm hard drive and it seems to be OK now for the first time. Hopefully this is will solve the problem for good

USB drives are not supported and have been known to cause problems with Pro Tools. Was the latency between channels a lot? Did you do a loop back to check the outputs or were you just hearing latency?

necjamc is correct, you will most likely get into trouble using a drive with know issues.

Glyph FW drives, You can get them from sweetwater, or Guitar Center. They are pretty much a standard in the industry.
Or if it's a desktop, WD Caviar Black drives are good internal drives, a lot of people use them.
