When you listen to it fully to the left, you are listening to the audio that is coming in, in real time, when it is always to the right you are listening to the audio that is coming through the computer.

It is best to have it fully to the right, then there will be no delay between recording and playback.

I find that if it's fully right, the latency between what I'm playing and what I'm hearing is off putting. So I put it to about 10 o clock and mute the channel I'm recording onto so I hear the playback mixed in with my direct input sound. Then if the recorded track doesn't quite match up I just move the region on the Edit window.

That's exactly what the mix knob was designed for.

And, moving the recorded region afterward should not be necessary. PT is smart enough to put the audio exactly where it's supposed to be. Compensating for the buffer delay.

F.ex, with a playback buffer at a certain size, the playback you hear has a certain amount of delay, so as you play along, you're actually playing a bit late. Bigger buffer: longer delay. PT automatically compensates for this and puts the audio a bit back.

You can check for yourself: record some audio, play it on your speakers and record it with a mic on a new track. Zoom in on the regions to check that they line up. PT should tackle this, whatever the buffer size.

(But we're talking VERY small amounts of delay here: f.ex 250 samples buffer = 5.6 milliseconds.)
