Looking into at alternatives to Q10. Anyone have any good methods to test how tight different eq's can notch?

Izotope RX hum module has notches that go down to -60db. The filter also has a "free frequency" setting where you can chose the exact frequency you want to notch. It also has up to 8 harmonics available and high pass with user definable frequency.

Equality also has configurable filters with a max Q of 50 (don't judge by the actual Q number), and someone else mentioned Equick (same developer as Equality but with Equick you can make more filters as you need them). If this is not sufficient (where really it should be) you can stack 2 filters and double dbs of reduction.

I think that when people look for EQ they are looking for the most natural sounding EQ/Filter, with the less resonance and minimal phase shift at the X over point. In my opinion Equick and Equality are very smooth sounding and really much, much better that Waves Q10. Again, in my opinion, Waves Q10 sounds really harsh, kind of metallic and just very "digital processing".

Check out the DMG stuff

EQuality and EQuick are very good. Even linear phase and affordable.

After I tried them I emmediately bought them. I have never opened Waves Q Series again

Equick. You can have up to 32 bands. You can solo the bands, and it has a built in analyzer display.

Hello,
Some of you have Nuendo, if so try the Post Filter plugin. It has harmonically related multiple filters and works well. Very tight, little audibility.

How are you suppose to use it in PT?

While it might be great, I can't see anyone using Nuendo for a filter and then dealing with exporting and reimporting to PT.

Alot of issues with Nuendo's import/export of AAF/OMF.

There are plenty of great filters out there that can be used in PT without having to leave the app.

Imho, the best notches were available in UN-EQUILIZER. Very deep (90 dB, if I'm not mistaken), narrow and with almost no ringing artifacts (unlike Q10). Lots of headroom too. Built-in analyzer.
Unfortunately, it is not supported anymore.

+1 Equality, gives you tight q factors, plus the option for linear phase to limit the pesky ringing crud.
