Default Internal HD\'s

Is it possible to successfully record, edit & mix 12-16 tracks on the internal HD's of the new G4's. With such large HD configs these days, I was hoping to avoid an external scsi chain. Is this doable?

The guys who originally demoed the PTLE package were using the "cheap" G4 with the ATA/33 drive several months ago. They claimed to be able to get 16-20 tracks with that drive. I don't know if it was partitioned or not, however.

Even if you have reservations, there are MANY people (myself included) who are using a 2nd ATA drive, not a SCSI drive for the audio files. Those only cost $200-300 depending on the size.

Does this mean it's possible with a MIX (plus) system to use the internal 18gig? Will apps like MEZZO see this drive and perform safe back-ups? Do I have to partition this drive for safety reasons?

Anyone have experience with this would be very appreciated.

I should clarify, the Digi guys who were doing the PTLE system and using the ATA/33 drive were using the 001, not a TDM system.

I am using a 27 gig ATA 66 on a G-3. So it is running at ATA 33. Formatted into 4 volumes. 24 tracks. No problem. I agree Claire SCSI is a pain.
