Default Upgrading to OS X

I' m about to install OS X on my Cube, where I will continue to run ProTools FREE in OS 9.2.2. I understand that PTF does not run in Classic mode and that I will need to boot in 9 in order to run PTF. I remember reading in this forum the suggestion to install OS X and OS 9 on separate partitions, but I didn't read anything about that in the installation instructions on the Apple website. Do any of you have any relevant experience that you'd be willing to share? Must I partition my hard drive and install 9 and X on separate partitions, or is this unnecessary?

Thanks,
John Link

I just read in the Mac Help that each bootable disk may have only one System Folder, so I will need to partition my 20-gig hard drive. Assuming that I am going to use OS 9 only for PTF, how should I partition it? Maybe 15/5? Any suggestions?

You might try asking about the X/9 partition thing in here.

I'm not too hip on the OSX stuff. Still stuck in 9.

If you check my profile you'll see what the M stands for.

I decided to make the partitions 15 GB for OS X and 5 GB for OS 9. It all works just fine. Switching startup disks works perfectly, Pro Tools FREE works as long as I boot in OS 9, and all other applications for 9 run in Classic.

Good to see you got it handled.

One day I may have a Mac for X. Of course by then OSY will be out.

Have you seen the new Mac Mini for as low as $499? I thought the Cube was small, but this thing could fit in the air space in the bottom of a Cube! Take a look:

Yeah, the mini is cool. Unfortunately though the eMac smokes it in disk I/O.

I'll probably end up getting a MDD G4 that can dual-boot since I'll still need 9 for a while.

What's an MDD?

Right, because PTF doesn't run in OS X. That's what will prevent me from replacing my Cube with a Mini.

MDD would be "Mirrored Drive Door" aka "Buick". The last dual-boot G4.

There are some other apps, and hardware that I have that I can't afford to replace with X compatable versions as well.

Of course I could just keep on using the trusty ol' 8600, but I think once I get a Mac that will run 9 as fast as a MDD it'll be too slow in comparison.
