I'll be damned!!

I was speculating about Emagic dropping VST and ASIO (which are both Steinberg technologies) since the Apple acquisition of Emagic. But to have it confirmed is quite a surprise! This is a bold and great move by Emagic and undoubtedly Apple has a big say in this.

Unfortunately, while rosy clouds are on the horizon, Emagic/Apple's good intentions might be spoilt by third-party developers' unwillingness to jump on the wagon.

Notably, our own Digidesign that has kept PT s/w and h/w as a closed standard for a number of reasons. A move that mostly have not been in the end users interest.

But I hope that Digi believe enough in their products to understand that WE need them to embrace the OS X standards to remain industry leaders.

TDM plug-ins development is dwindling. Now, six months after the introdution of HD, there are still a lot less TDM plug-ins available for HD than for Mix. This is an unacceptable situation and the only way forward for Digi to remain the DAW for the masses is to support OS X core audio and MIDI following Emagic/Apple's lead...

Did you ever think the reason there's no plug-ins for HD at the present is because when Digi releases 10.2 support you will need new plugs

Make sense

Digi isn't going to throw away TDM so as to support Core Audio. They will just write a OSX version of PT still using TDM. It would be suicidal to do anything else. W/O TDM you lose the entire highend market. And there are only a couple of plugins not yet available for HD, those should be out very soon. THe only thing that may keep people from getting HD is the lack of need to run at frequencies over 48k and more than 64 tracks. Most Mix owners are thinking 'if I dont need that stuff, why not just buy more mix farms instead'. But as long as people are buying new systems HD will replace mix. Slowly but surely.

The new Massenburg EQ is going to be HD only according to George M himself.....

Plug ins in the future (new developed ones) may only support HD? This might eventually be a reason to upgrade for some folks, if this is the case.

And of course.. note:

DAE support is currently unavailable. This is planned, but the development must be carried out in cooperation with Digidesign. We expect Digidesign will issue a statement regarding this in the near future.

The opportunity for other platforms and companies to move to the Apple audio standards (CoreAudio, CoreMidi, Audio Units) is too important to miss! What an advantage this would give the MacOS over anything windows. Can you imagine only having to deal with one plug-in format???? Or how about the software designers, only having to code for one format?

That's the way it should have been all along... I'll spend my money to support that idea...

Now if it only wasn't still just Logic...

What suprises me is that Logic os-x also runs with os-x 10.15, not only jaguar.
