Default Newer G4 in a 9500 w/PT? Any probs?

I have been using a Newer G3 300 card in my 9500 and it is sweet, but now my wife wants me to buy a faster Newer card so that she can have my G3 300.

The cost difference between a G3 400 and a G4 card is not all that much...

Anybody using a Newer G4 card in an old platform like the 9500 with PT? Are there any minefields with the G4 card?

Thx,

steveV

I just upgraded to a Newer G4 on my 9600. I get a crash per day. (used to be every 2-3 days) Also, Unity and Retro won't run more than 5 min. before crashing. Both PT & Unity are at a Loss. PT says its the card, (they don't support the G3 or G4 Upgrades) and Unity says it may be the card. I think it's the card. The per day crashes are well worth the G4's speed. But the Unity thing is a pain... I'll probably go to a Real G4.

I've been looking into the upgrade card thing, and the general opinion seems to be that the G4 cards are dodgier with audio/digidesign than the G3 ones.
There has been (still is?) an "official" newertech issue with their G4 cards and digidesign, I believe.

Thanks for the comments, and the pointer to the Troubleshooting section.

My understanding was that, while Digi wouldn't "support," or encourage systems with NewerTech cards, that the Newer ones were the only cards that sufficiently supported the throuput necessary for Digi/audio production.

My current system, with the 300/300 G3 card in a 9500 and PT5 on a d24 is the most stable Digi system I've had since '94! The Newer card is transparent, I don't think I've looked at the control panel for it since I installed it. Another fellow here in town has two very similar systems and the G3 card has been wonderful in them too.

It looks like the 400mhz G3 card would be a better choice than the G4.

Thanks!

I think you're right. The newertech G3 400 card seems to be the best bet for the x500 macs. Anyone disagree?

I have the "updated" ver. of the newertech G4 450 coming soon and I hope (X my fingers) will rock. Once installed I will post my verdict. I'm running a 200/ 9600 PT 5 mix plus and one farm and it's perfect so we will know the truth about newertech.

regards,
