Default Mbox 2 Pro causing problems

My Mbox 2 Pro has started causing problems (as of yesterday).

When I plug it in it sometimes causes my Mac to shutdown as soon as it recognises the device. When I reboot and get into PT, I have H/W Buffer issues, even though I may only be running 1 MIDI track, 1 Aux track and no plugins.

I figured out that it was the Mbox causing the problems after checking permissions, several reboots etc., then a Youtube video didn't have sound. As soon as I got the Mb2P firing out audio, PT was fine.

Last night I shutdown as per the directions in the PT10 Reference Guide. When I booted up this morning (again, as per the Avid guidelines) my Mac told me that my computer was not shut down properly. Still no joy with the Mb2P.

I've got it working now just by unplugging it (with everything else still fired up, MIDI device, external HD, but not PT open).

I do not have the Mb2P connected up to the mains. I haven't needed to since I've had it (2007), but I will test that. I'm daisy-chaining it into the external HD and then into the iMac as I only have 1 FW port.

Anyone got any ideas? I've had PT 10 for about a week and it was all working fine. I can't think of anything I changed on my system that might have had an effect, particularly as I run PT on it's own user profile.

Thanks anyone.

Pt10 with a mbox 2 pro? What gives ??? Something ain't right ?

What's ur main interface ?

Boot PT with a new session and the core audio - what happens ? Works fine huh - What about drivers - u need a stand alone driver for the Mbox

The Mb2P is my main interface. It's qualified with OS X 10.8.3 and PT 10.4.3, so I can't see why it should be a problem. The strange thing is that it was fine, but just started playing up seemingly at random.

When I upgraded to PT10, I ran a clean uninstall of LE 8 and installed the 10.3.3 Drivers before installing 10.

I don't think it's a driver issue, but next time I get the problem (probably tomorrow), I'll try the new session/core audio thing. Although, I reckon that will work because the problem I'm having with PT is related to the Mb2P, so take that out of the equation and I expect it'll run. It doesn't explain why the Mac intermittently shuts down when the Mb2P is connected though (or when the external HD is switched on, to be more accurate, but the Mb2P is daisy-chained through it).

So you have it powered with the wall wart - at all times right? B/c if it pulling too much current for the computer that might explain it

However - I would be curious To create a new session with just the mbox plugged in no daisychain no external hard drive

create new session see what you get - play with it - see if it shuts down - let it sit for several hours - what did it do? Stable?

I like your thinking. Actually, I don't use the power adapter because Avid say to use it if you're using a "portable computer". This got me thinking further, and I think the problems started around about the time I went to Avid's recommended startup/shut-down procedure. By switching on the Korg Triton before powering up the audio interface and external hd (to which it's connected) perhaps that was creating a surge of power demand when the hd is switched on (?).

It seems like a logical explanation. I'm having no problems now that I'm using the power adapter, anyway. Thanks!

And it was going so well....

Last night I switched on my external drive and another kernel panic occurred. The MB2P was connected to the HD before I switched it on and it was also plugged in with the power cable.

Edit: I was nowhere near PT, this has nothing to do with PT or how it runs. It's either my external drive or the MB2P. Given that it hasn't occurred when the MB2P isn't connected and sometimes occurs when it is, I'd say it's got something to do with it.
