Maybe I misunderstand.

When I use VEP with, say, kontakt I set up one instrument track with the server plugin which counts as channel 1 for kontakts midi and audio.

Then I make another instrument track with no plugin, route the midi to the VEP kontakt channel 2 and have that audio piped back into the second instrument track.

I only mention since I used to use the midi+aux workflow until I realized that using only instrument tracks could achieve the same thing with less clutter.

For PT Strawberry the Instrument Track limit is 64 (facepalm). So, depending on the template, the MIDI+Aux method is still very useful.

However, the routing for this with VEP 5 on large templates can be the script for Les Misérables, which is another reason why I could use Strawberry 11.

Meet the edible version of PT native. Interesting how the Instrument Track limit and calories are about the same.

You can also use other 64bit VIs that are not yet AAX via VEP5.
For e.g. your IK Multimedia VIs are not yet 64bit (Sampletank, Miroslav etc), but you can use them in ProTools 11 or other 64bit DAWs via VE Pro.

It's your call, but I'm sure IK and other VIs will all be 64bit soon. Maybe you can wait for AAX versions of those plugins and ignore VEP5.

One reason I like VEP is that you can sequence in any DAW without having to reload VIs. It is like using a very powerful and flexible external sound module.
