PT 11 play and edit operations

I used to be able to press play and playback my session, and while its playing, select areas and perform edits such as cuts.

Now I'm no longer able to do that, when I select an area it starts playing from there. The icons that control link track and edit selection just don't function as they used to---I was able to do this in PT7 HD..seems to me it worked in PT11 when I first got it.
Any ideas?

Dynamic Transport enabled + Link Track and Edit Selection enabled ?
