I've set up a MIDI track, sent the MIDI to my external piano, then recorded the audio from the piano back into Tools. Look at the difference just switching delay compensation on makes, despite there being NO plugs to actually compensate for...why should this happen??

This one at least seems logical to me in that the audio is coming in late due to unavoidable latency from the computer to the keyboard, then from the audio making its way back into Pro Tools.

Yes I accept the 95ms delay, but why would it increase with delay compensation on to 1100ms, particularly when there’s nothing to compensate for?

Good point. Yes that makes no sense.

Ok, I opened a support case with Avid so we'll see what comes of that.

In the meantime, still trying a few tests. Strangely enough, I used the Commit function to render some midi notes that are too early on the timeline and the notes in the rendered file are actually LATE! I don't know WTF is going on.

As far as I know, both the Commit and Freeze functions are still broken in PT.
For this particular problem, I logged following case back in January 2017:

Case 03120087 - Instrument Track Commit results in huge audio delay - Case Closed - Bug Logged/Known Defect - 1/8/2017

Haha ok! So... how does one record and make music using Instrument Tracks and MIDI in Pro Tools? Maybe this is why so much modern music sounds either 100% quantized or sloppy ahead of the beat? ;-)

My method is record midi, commit, and then nudge it until it sounds somewhat like what I played. Good times. :-|

Just forget about serious MIDI-based composition and production in PT. It's not fit for purpose.

I don’t think I’m ready to switch DAWs at this point! ;-)

I guess one workaround is to pencil a few notes to the grid, Commit, then measure the difference so I can nudge the audio later after I perform a part.

Yeah, as long as you can be sure that difference always stays the same constant value. With Tools, who knows...

Do you guys have any luck if you go into prefs/midi tab and ensure 'global midi playback offset -10,000 to 10,000) is set to zero (0)?

I was having similar issues with Superior Drummer 3 commits, out of the blue where they were fine and perfectly on time with the midi previously. I tried everything, reimported data into a new session to re-commit etc, disabled all plugs except SD3, disabled all sends, tried heat on/off, delay comp on/off... nothing worked except I had -3000 or something in the above parameter that I swear I never changed. Maybe a bug is setting that randomly even if you had it on zero previously.

Go check, it MIGHT work.

After putting it to '0' my SD3 commit is perfect again.
