Default s/pdif woes

I just upgraded from 5.3.1 to 6.9.1 and my s/pdif loop is acting weird. I selected s/pdif in the "Digital Format" pane of the hardware setup. I selected s/pdif (encl) as my input for 9 and 10, but the output selection for "s/pdif (encl)" is greyed out. I cannot select anything but optical 1-2 .

with the previous software (meaning yesterday) I used this for my effects loop in and out of a Kurzweil Rumour. Testing it out now with "optical 1-2" selected as my output it actually "works" after a fashion BUT, if I raise the aux it begins to feed back. Even at low levels the feedback affects the sound. I changed nothing on my outboard gear or 96 i/o, just upgraded the software.

I suspect that the greyed out output selection for "s/pdif (encl)" is connected to the feedback, but I don't know how to make it show up.
