It's more like my car breaking down and needing a new ride metaphorically speaking.

Actually my DVD-drive finally failed on my 2002 laptop which is a pentium 4-m 2.0 GHZ. Even though Pro tools still works, I can't burn audio cd's. I can run Pro tools 7.3 even though it does not even satisfy the minimum of Digi requirements.

Anyways, isn't Vista a souped up improved version of Windows Xp literally? ...with all the SP2 improvements and then some?

Actually, Vista is an entire re-write (which is LONG overdue) of the basic architecture of the code. While it will incorporate some of the XP / MCE features, it promises to present a whole new of (yet undetermined) issues with 3rd party apps...

MAC users should be able to chime in and share how smoothly the MAC OS upgrades have been over the past few years with its' impact on their PT systems. and as someone stated in the post, this is with DIGI being tied to APPLE, first!!

i hear ya wolfskin. what's the rush??? as a rule, when i worked as a mainframe system prgmr for BIG BLUE, we had a general rule. stay a generation behind in 'gen levels' on software. it'll keep your customers happy and keep you with LESS headaches. i apply this same rule to my music systems also!! it works too. hell, i'm still on SP1 runnin PT 7.1!!!

I guess I don't understand the 'technology lust'... I mean, if you've got a working and (relatively) stable system running PT, why would you want to migrate to Vista now?

Because processors are all going 64 bit, and it would be nice to take advantage of that.

because with a full 20bit out of a A/D converter we realy need 64 bit floating point processing. the only real advantage is the memory a system can use and i dont think many people are at the point of needing that much memory.

My $0.02:

Get two removable system drives. One for Win XP/Protools and the other for experimenting with Vista until Digidesign makes a version for Vista. Simpy shut down, swap drives, and power up to change between the systems. I don't know if Vista has dual boot with XP but that is another option.

You dont know what flavor of Vista (Home, Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate) will get certified with the Vista version of Protools yet. It may be all or it may exclude one or more. Don't assume your plug-ins will work until they are upgraded too. I hope ILok won't be a problem. Look for Protools HD version to come out first and then the LE version for Vista as Protools HD is their premier product line. Also older hardware (MBox 1, Pro Control, Command 24) may not have drivers initially (or ever). Forget Audiomedia III and Digi001 as support for those went away years ago.

Your two cents worth represents good value for money.
I run three OS, each on separate HDD.
32 bit Vista Ultimate arriving tomorrow with new HDD.
64 bit drivers are a long way off yet, 32 bit drivers just around the corner.
Too bad architecture and hardware have advance so rapidly, or are the software writers running last in the race.
No hurry, plenty of toys to play with.

MAC users should be able to chime in and share how smoothly the MAC OS upgrades have been over the past few years with its' impact on their PT systems
as a mac user (MAC is for networking web page ) at every major revision of the Mac OS X i.e. 10.2 to 10.3 and to 10.4 the
revision broke compatibility with Protools. Many moaned and groaned as to why digi cannot
take development builds and release a version of protools on this.. some of the hooks in
mac os were changed at every major revision. And many complained at the time lost due to
not being able to work on the latest revision of the OS...

Im hoping this summer when apple released Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) the wait is not as
long as other releases. I remember reading an article where these OS hooks were set in
stone in version 10.4 so developers could rely on not having to change code dramatically
for future revisions.. I hope this is case for 10.5

Im sure digi has had developers working on Vista beta releases and will qualify that OS
as soon as it possible for them to do so... Regardless of mac or windows... Digi never
releases a compatible version when the new OS comes out.. we all have to wait.
