I had been using an HDX1 for about a year and recently added a 2nd card. The fan noise was never an issue until this addition. It seems to kick on about 20 minutes into a session regardless of I/O density or plugin count. As soon as I quit PT the fans turn off.

Hello dwayne,

Our systems are HDX2 and HDX3, perhaps the firmware has an issue with that. Naturally with more than one card there is a higher heat load to deal with. However as noted above, when the fans came on we did thermal scanning of both cards in use and nothing on them, no components, were elevated in temperature. As a part-time circuit designer I know thermal parameters pretty well. The firmware is simply not programmed correctly and should be corrected.

It is my understanding that the first (pre release) HDX cards has NO fan.

So I am thinking of disconnecting the 2nd HDX card for the next few months while I am in editing mode as I don't really need it until our large 7.1 stems come into play. Do I need to take out the card or can I simply disconnect the link and power cables from card 1 to card 2?

The fans are just too loud in my cutting room.

The power cable is just an auxiliary one so it won't fully de-power the card, it might just come up with errors. I'd love them to address this, I run a tiny operation (me!) so I have all the kit in the room with me. A colleague of mine has spent £500+ on remoting his rig - fine for a full-on facility, very boring for small setups.

Rather than up an older thread or start a new one - I figured this thread and my enquiry are on point enough...

On the verge of going HDX here from HDN... Can I get some input here on noise levels for a lightly used HDX1 in a Sonnet Echo III? I have a project studio and unfortunately no machine room but can at least get the Echo III about 5 feet away and closer to floor level in a rack. I HATE fan noise and currently the AVID 16X16 with Silenx fan upgrade is the only thing I hear in my room (only other fan is nMP).

Comments on the current state of HDX1 fan noise in Sonnet chassis very much appreciated. Any simple dBA readings at any distance?? Noise level in my room is now 34dBA at operator position and I like it

Hey there... my friends have HDX1's in the Sonnet Box. They say the fans rarely come on. The noise will come from the Sonnet itself, if anything. FWIW
