Default ProTools LE8: sending audio to s/pdif

Have Pro Tools LE 8 installed at home with Digidesign Rack 003 as the interface. Just been given a Focusrite VRM unit as another mix-down aid. This is driving me nuts trying to get it to work. Have installed the software from the CD; have connected the unit as shown with USB to computer and link to S/PDIF out on the 003 Rack using co-axial cable with RCA connector. VRM software shows S/PDIF locked so I am assuming the two units are recognising each other. What is defeating me - a Pro Tools new-ish user - is the simple statement "In your audio interface's control panel, ensure that audio is sent to the S/PDIF output of your audio interface". Can any more experienced users please explain - in simple terms - how I do this?

Many thanks for any help received.

Default Re: ProTools LE8: sending audio to s/pdif

Pro Tools>Setup>I/O>Output Tab

Click 'New Path'>stereo> name it Focusrite VRM or anything you like. Click create. Now in grid, hover mouse over S/PDIF 17_18 and you'll see a pencil tool appear. Click in the boxes corresponding to the VRM path you created and a L & R will appear in the boxes.

So looking at the grid as an X Y graph, if you follow the VRM path from left to right to channels 17_18 and then look straight up you will see that L & R that you inserted should correspond to S/PDIF.

Now click on 'Default Output Bus' for a popup menu which will lead you to the VRM (or whatever you named it) path, then select that as default output bus. Click OK.

It looks to me like the VRM has an internal clock source only which means it can't be synced externally. If that is indeed the case you will want to go to; Pro Tools>Setup>Hardware and set the 003R clock source to S/PDIF. Click OK.
