Default Elastic Audio Artefacts

Hi

I am really hoping someone can help me. I wrote a film cue and sent it to a string section and got it recorded.

The director was very happy with it all but then changed his mind and wanted it to last into the closing credits instead of the end of the film, I need it played 6% slower. Set elastic time from 100% to 106%.

I re-recorded the midi to new audio, but I had to use elastic time on the Violin 1, 2, Violas, Celli , Double Basses audio.

This has not caused any clicks but has caused like a bumping sound/sensation now and again, especially in the double basses. It isn't too bad, but is noticeable!!

Can anyone please help me, I am really stuck and need some advice. I am running Pro-Tools 8 HD.

Thanks in advance!

Elastic Audio is ok for auditioning something quickly but it does not give you the best results possible. (Even when X-Form rendered)

My personal favourite is the Waves SoundShifter (Parametric)

It causes the least number of artefacts IMHO.

Experiment with the different algorithms.

I tried all the algorithms, but they all cause the same effect, in different amounts. Is poly the best in this situation?

Still not really great and I can't afford the waves!!!!

Any other ideas?

sometimes decreasing the "Event Sensitivity" within the Elastic Properties window can reduce unwanted artifacts.

Select region(s), Right-click Elastic Properties and adjust.

Hi

I will play with the sesitivity and see if that helps. For a Violin section would you suggest Mono or Poly elastic mode?

Sometimes the older plug-ins such as Serato Pitch'n'Time or SoundToys Speed may have better results. Different algorithms.

Many of these AudioSuite plug-ins (Waves SoundShifter included) have different results depending on the level they were recorded at. Tim mentioned this when he suggested sensitivity settings. Many live strings are recorded at very low level, and if this is the case you might want to try a gain increase on the audio first, then try the time stretch plug-ins again. See which one works best.

You could even import into Logic and try the built-in tools there.

It may of course be simply that you must re-record the strings if all these suggestions fail to please.

Are there fades in your files?

I would give Melodyne a try. For me, I have got best stretching results using Melodyne. I assume Melodyne Editor would be great. I always used the old Melodyne Plug-in. You may have to mix the strings together to a stereo track first and then import into the Melodyne plug-in and play back.

It's worth a try.

Hi

No there are no fades. I just have 5 audio files (VLN1, VLN2, VLA, VLC, DB) that I need to stretch by 6%.

I have tried Logic, but it was worst!! Think it is because it is continuous sound and not percussive or stop and start.

Unfortunately I don't have $800 to spend on waves and getting it redone by the strings is a no go as well!!

No sure what to do!
