With a 64 bit operating system running a 32 bit program, the 32 bit program - PT in this case - will see no more than 4 gb of RAM and probably less. However, since it's a 64 bit operating system any more RAM than 4 gb will be available for other programs and for the operating system. Future proof yourself, use a 64 bit operating system and get a minimum of 16 gb of RAM. Surely you're not going to stay on PT 9 forever? Actually, you should be thinking of upgrading to PT 12 - or later - sometime.

You have the spec you need. Myself, guitardom, and albee1952 have built a ton of PT systems over the past 16 years. Spending hours going through the list of approved systems and the i7 builds thread will bring you to the spec you already have from guitardom.

Thanks Bruce. Yes I'll probably wind up going to 10 but because of all the posts about problems with same I'm a bit shy of making that move.

Terry, to take full advantage of your new computer, at least go to 11. I don't use PT to anywhere close to it's potential or stress my computer, but Windows 10 and PT12.5.2 is fine here.

If Terry needs to do this on a tight budget, then 8GB of RAM would be an okay choice as PT9 is a 32 bit app(but I would NOT go less, no matter what anyone has to say) Your 64 bit OS will be much happier with more RAM. One other route to consider is an off-lease HP Z800. I just saw one go on eBay for $600 and it had dual Xeon 6 core cpu's

Re 810 and his i7 laptop, it could very well be down to a chipset that is not compatible(the motherboard chipset can make or break any Windows system). PC laptops have been rather hit or miss(and its tougher to actually find out what chipset is in play). For that reason, this PC user usually recommends a MacBook Pro i7 for anyone that needs a laptop. A desktop machine will always win the dollars vs power battle

+1

My PT 9/W7 64-bit rig is still in my signature. It's always been rock solid.

No it seems to work fine now. Everything located, including the cache adjuster inside setup / playback engine (this one goes all the way up to 16GB or something), that didn't exist in PT 8...
And including the i/o bus adjustment of as many as I want...I was often limited by the max 32 in PT 8.....And I'm rockin 192 kHz AAalso not available in old PT.

When the battery goes low the cpu starts to spike. System thing.

This setup is smooth as heck!

That's great news. If you would, post the exact model for others that might be on the lookout
