Default How do people survive with 96 voices at 88.2k?

I'm relatively new to HD TDM and I've completely drowned the voice count so quickly.

Here's a usual session...

There are 4 mics on a guitar cab plus a di, so that's 5 voices for Guitar number 1. I have 3 guitars so that's 15 right there.

About 3 synths lanes, stereo.. which is 6 voices.

Bass is di and cab, 2 voices.

VSTs... about 5 stereo... 10 voices.

Vox and backing vox... about 10 voices.

Drums - 10 voices.

Various sounds - 6 voices.

So without plugins, I'm down almost 60 voices already. I've tried allocating, but the tracks are usually busy at the same time, and you cant allocate tracks with Native plugins. And sends totally kill the voice count.

How do you guys manage large sessions in real time without printing?

Why are you recording at such a high sampling rate? That is a huge part of your issue. Record at 44.1, there's no audible advantage of higher than that.

I haven't done a shootout but I thought 88.2 and 96 were the most common choices for standard recording after researching this topic

I very seldom have a project come through the studio at higher than 48k.

So 44.1 is much more widely used in studios?

Can I change my sessions to 44.1k after they've already been started at 88.2?

Create new session, import session data, done.

I'm voting for 48K over 44.1. The performance hit is immeasurable(essentially), Video wants 48K, SRC has gotten good enough that its really a non-issue, and it pushes the upper end(and the nyquist filter) high enough to avoid phase issues(for most of us humans)

Back to your original list of tracks used; I never felt the need for 4 mics on a cab(ribbon and dynamic cover my needs). The more guitar tracks I use, the fewer mics I use for each. I had a client send a session with 5 tracks per "part" and about 8-9 guitar parts and it was a total mess. Simplify and pan yielded a very happy client(a very good guitarist that engineered the recording, and over-thought the entire process) Please don't get me wrong. I am a guitarist and have spent days with a dozen mics, trying to get "that sound". In the end, I actually got it by using a lot less, but in better ways

Last thought re TDM/HD; it takes at least HD3(3 cards) to handle what a native system can do these days

Wooo! Life changing to go to 44.1k! Half the space and more cpu. My powers have doubled since we last met Count Dooku....

Thanks!

My assistant once sent an mp3 final mix ref to the mastering house. Instead of the 441 24 bit wave file. There was some confusion and the mp3 was mastered. This was for a major label release of a single for a new artist. We all liked the sound so the label just used it. I sent the full resolution files for the instrumentals and a capella plus vocal up down masters but the main mastered mix released as a single was from an mp3 mix. Lol. Sounded great.
