I don't know how useful this poll actually is. For feature films, you absolutely need a filled M&E plus additional 'optional tracks' and 'guide DX stems'. (For documentaries or TV shows, this might be different.)

I don't think it helps.
95% of the time for TV (non drama) reversioning just the DME is used. There just isn't the budget or the time to fiddle with stems.

What is required is a post production coordinator who knows what they're doing, to liaise with the production partners and decipher the ridiculous and often unnecessary delivery specs. For instance, one UK broadcaster still species Dolby E in their delivery requirements but don't actually want it.

Thanks Mike. I've had to deal with a 14 page audio deliverables list, shared amongst 3 co - producers. It took an hour long transatlantic conference call to boil it down to one page.

The HBO CRAM spec was a great one - 64 tracks wide, splitting off dialogue, location fx, principle ADR, crowd / non main language ADR, spot FX, background FX, score, incidental music, Foley, the works. Great for reversioning but hard work to deliver. They even send over a supervisor for the M&E mix, because that deliverable is the most valuable.

As Alan (hello btw) has said, it's really become part of our jobs to decipher and deliver what the client needs. It's something that can set you apart from the crowd.

Yes - I have been setting myself apart for the last 32 years - trust me I know all about this - but there are better ways /standards than the ones out there at the moment. I delivered a 5 part 52 minute series last week - 5.1 Mix - syndicated with 7 local distributors around the globe - and no 2 of them had the same delivery requirements - they all wanted the same thing but whoever made up the requiremnts had their own idea. It is fine if you get paid to sit and watch progress bars on delivery items - unfortunately over here we are working at 20% of the budgets that the European and North American allow - even if we have the same gear and experience - so wasting time to do a mono MDE without non host sync, but at levels which do not conform to the rest of the deliverables for a far flung station that will only ever broadcast the English final mix, just does not make sense anymore. Its 2015.
