Default Possible to sync/link PC-based rigs?

Now that my new rig seems to be settled in, my old 6 core rig looks lonely in the corner I got to thinking it might make a great VI host, but all my searching on linking 2 machines only relates to Mac setups. I'd love to know how to do it with 2 PC's. Any hardware requirement? I see SYNC IO boxes really cheap but Sync HD boxes are all over a grand
