Default 2010 Mac Pro digital input question..

I was thinking I could get digital audio into my mac pro via a 8 channel Midas XL48 Mic pre with lightpipe output by going into the digial audio input of my mac pro using and optical cable. But no such luck.
The mic pre does not seem to show up under audio midi setup or sound preference. I thought the mac pros could except 8 channels of dat input via the digital input??
I know usually you need a driver for an interface but I thought this might work I tried it on my macbook pro and the same thing, nada.
I then tested the res with my omni set the clock to adapt and bingo it worked.

I wanted to basically use the preamp as an audio interface for REAPER. Any ideas on why this does not seem to work?

I tried to create a aggregate device also but it still only shows 2 channels not 8 nor did I get audio in with just 2 channels. Is the digital audio input only 2 channels of spidf. Tried 48k and 44.1 as well.

For sure it's only 44.1 or 48k

Also you would need to set the Midas for your source clock.....

But you really shouldn't have a problem using the OMNI for reaper, it works like that

Reaper does not see my omni at all? In the long run I don't want to use my omni with reaper. I had the Midas as the master clock as it only has optical out.
The mac pro only shows 2 channels and it snaps back to 44.1 after setting the clock to 48k on the omni. Something is not right here.
Also the Midas works fine going into the omni and then into pro tools. I get the 8 channels of mic pre via adat in hardware setup.
Really wonder why this does not work, it did not work on my macbook pro either in MT Lion. They just don't seem to see the clock from the Midas at all.

Looks like I found my answer...

From SOS forum 2012.

The optical input on the mac only supports SPDIF.
To get ADAT into the mac you will need a device that coverts the ADAT to either USB or Firewire (or pci/pcie if it is a desktop.

I used this to go from the digital optical output on my Mac into the SPDIF on my 192, works great!
