Default How to install ProTools 10 trial on Mac w Pro Tools Express running Mavericks?

It was suggested that I try the full version of Pro Tools, before buying the upgrade from Express. I tried installing Pro Tools 10.3.7 and I get the warning:
Incompatible Pro Tools Version
An incompatible previous version of Pro Tools was detected. Please do a clean uninstall of Pro Tools first before continuing with this install, using the uninstaller provided with Pro Tools 10.3.7.
Before I do anything, as I have experienced so many gotchas, I want to be absolutely sure I know what I need to do to uninstall Express so that I can reinstall it later. I will want to use or upgrade Express after my full Pro Tools trial is over.

Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad Core with 14GB ram running Mavericks 10.9.5

Thanks

Welcome to the community.

Since you are running on Mavericks you should install the Pro Tools 11 Trial (PT10 is not supported on Mavericks or later, Mavericks support was added in 11.0.3).

Also, since PT10 isn't supported on Mavericks, you'd need to manually remove files as instructed here.

Thanks Jeffro, I take it you work for Avid. I am trying to upgrade from PT Express. My son will eventually need to run the full version of Pro Tools 10 because the studio he is recording at uses PT 10. I thought you could run 10 side by side 11 (or 12). I can't downgrade my system below 10.9 and I read that even though it is not officially supported, that PT 10 will run on Mavericks but not Yosemite. Is this not true?

We currently have PT Express installed and working fine... I don't want to mess this up in his quest to try out the full version upgrade. If we had the Avid m version ( not the m-audio) version of Express, could we upgrade that on Mavericks? I read that you can't install PT Express on a Mac with Yosemite, but I do not know which version of PT Express that was referring to.

Is Avid not aware that a lot of studios are still using PT 10?

PT10 will install and run just fine on Mavericks. The only reason it's not on the approved list is because the uninstaller for PT10 doesn't work in Mavericks. There are many people here who have PT10 running just fine on Mavericks; don't know about PT Express though. You can run PT10 and PT11 on the same boot partition but if you do that make sure you install PT10 first and then install PT11. Doing it the other way around has been known to cause stability issues.
