Acoustic Guitar Noise

Morning Guys

Recently I recorded a very average guitar player, to be fair his style is distorted electric not acoustic, but with respect to this musician, this was his chosen medium for presentation, the acoustic guitar. So what we have ended up with here, is this non-clarity in his chord accuracy, resulting in this undefined note noise within the chord make up, like a fret resonance, but unlike this thread this will spread or permeate through the chord or waveform, not presenting it's self as a spike.

There's two train's of thought here, one being if you present rubbish you receive rubbish. I'm not sure if I totally subscribe to this, so this leads me to my point, can you polish rubbish? Are there mixing techniques or editing techniques that can erase or reduce this noise?

There are a few things to try..

You can find a good chord somewhere in the track to replace similar bad chords with copy/paste and crossfade.

If it is something like a string squeak some noise reduction plugs may catch them. As far as dead notes in the chord..not much you can do other than my first tip or punching in.

Yes he is, but I'm not. I can see it now with the circle of people I hang around with, (Ha, you now that filosofem, you should of heard the rubbish he produced for this musician, etc etc...) Why sign your name to rubbish.

We did something like three or four takes, with a number of punch-ins. It was like flogging a dead horse. The song it's self is good, just poorly played. But hey with respect to the musician, he's learning and so am I.

honestly, if the musician is happy with it, let it go. it's his song, not yours. I understand the way you feel and have ruined perfectly good songs by over engineering/producing it because my name was going to be on it. I still regret it. use a fake name if you need to.

as far as wasting your life automating EQ frequencies, if certain notes are being swallowed on certain chords, you can sorta use EQ to bring those notes out. since the notes change with each chord, the freqs need to be automated. this is really really not worth your time unless the song is let it be and the musician has died. just talk to the dude and let him know that you really like the song and you think it could be a lot better if he practiced and retracked it.

all that said, experiment with dumping low mid freqs and see if that helps 'clean it up' a bit.
