Control 24 sharing between 2 computers
Ok, so I have an LE setup sitting aside a Mix setup, and I need both in there for different things. How can I share the Control 24 easily?
To be clear, I don't intend to switch back and for between active sessions, although that could be cool too. I'd like to be able to have it hooked up on a hub or something so that whatever system fires up will see it. Is that all I need? just a hub? Or do I need a switch? Anyone? I'm sure somebody has done this. I do realize that I probably won't be able to switch between active sessions, at least not without manually disconnecting the Control 24 in peripherals and then refreshing peripherals on the other system. Not sure I'd ever need to anyway. I'd either be using one system or the other in most cases. The keyboard, mouse and monitor will be shared on a KVM Switch so it'll be quick to flip. Monitors (spkrs) will share through a phoenix gold selector. Just wanna figure out how to easily have the Control 24 connected as well. Anyone? Thanx

Re: Control 24 sharing between 2 computers
Shorty,
You can probably just wire up a switch box for it. Not sure the ramifications of switching stations for ethernet, but it should be possible. |

Re: Control 24 sharing between 2 computers
Wouldn't be hard to wire, it's just 8 wires per cable. Check out AEI in golden valley, they should have everything you'd need to make it.
It might be more practical to just buy one though, there's probably some company that makes one already. |

Re: Control 24 sharing between 2 computers
Is it a regular ethernet cable (CAT5) on the control 24? I thought it had some form of looping going on or something similar!! It may be more complex than you first thought. If it were a normal cable you could easily build a switch but I am sure there is something different about it, just can't remember off the top of my head. Good luck trying though.
A:)

I guess what I will try first is just hooking up through a hub or a switch. A hub will probably do it. If only one system has Pro Tools open at a time, then only one will be trying to see the Control 24 and I shouldn't have an issue. I think.

Re: Control 24 sharing between 2 computers
Hub - good
switch - better Router - best But you're right a hub will probably work. |

Re: Control 24 sharing between 2 computers
Hub - good
Switch - better if other devices are attached to the same physical network, such as another computer. If it's just the computer and the 24, no difference (all other things being equal) Router - an actual router is not relevant in this equation. the connection between the computer and the Control 24 is Layer 2 networking (think MAC addresses), not Layer 3. Routing happens at Layer 3 (think IP addresses). You may be referring to something like a Linksys router, which is actually just a switch between the LAN ports. Which brings up an interesting point. In a dedicated, no-internet computer you can turn off all that stuff under the networking properties except the Digi driver. My computer has no MS Client, No IP address, etc. Just the Digi driver and it works fine with the 24. |
