Default 192 I/O Question? 16 Analog In & Out?

Is the 192 I/O truly 16 Analog In & Out?
With the Dsub connectors, can I get 16 TRS In & Out?

Or do I just need 2 96s?

Thanks,
Adrian

The standard 192 comes with 8 AD converters so you can only convert 8 channels at a time. You can use 8 analog inputs and 8 digital inputs at the same time if you want to. If you want 16 analog inputs at the same time you need to purchase an expansion card that adds 8 more converters. You may see on the back that the standard unit has 2 D connectors in the analog section. ! is for +4 and one is for -10 inputs. I don't believe you can use both at the same time but I'm not sure on that. Of course 2 96 I/O's would work also.

If you call Digidesign and speak to their product information they should be able to answer this one for you.

You can also use an outboard device for an additional 8 analog A/D on a 192. E.g., the ADAT input will take an M-audio Octane, inexpensive (relatively) and works well.

There's only one internal expansion slot to the 192, so you can only add either 8 more A/D, or 8 D/A. If you really need that many outputs, too, a very cheap (not as quiet as the Maudio) 8 A/D and 8D/A is the Behringer ADA8000. There are plenty of others, too.

Also, as I understand from the products page (link above, select HD, then interfaces),the list for a Digi "96i IO" with 16 A/D channels and 2 channels D/A built in is $2200 (only $200 more than the the 8 channel '96 IO').

As Steve pointed out the 96i interface has only two outputs instead of 8 like the traditional 96 I/O. Also you loose AES inputs and outputs and ADAT inputs and outputs. Not worth it for most people in my opinion.
