Upgrade To Current Mac Pro 7.1
I would like to upgrade to a new 12 or 16 core Mac Pro 7.1.
Our local apple reseller here in South Africa has informed me that the machines are all build-to-order and WILL ONLY ship with Big Sur, which i believe can not be back dated to Cantelina / Mojave. Who here is running a 7.1, and how did you accomplish running PT? System would need to be a supported config. |

Re: Upgrade To Current Mac Pro 7.1
I thought Macs could be backdated to the OS they originally shipped with, which was Catalina for the 7,1.
It certainly won't run Mojave, but I'm using PT on a 7,1 with Catalina and everything works fine. Big Sur is a whole other headache apparently.

Re: Upgrade To Current Mac Pro 7.1
These were my thoughts too.
Apple here have said the mac's are now shipping with Big Sur.... Now does this mean that a new mac (now) shipping with Big Sur can't be back dated... or does this mean that... the 7.1 model originally shipped with Cantelina and therefor can be back dated? The Apple reseller here have told me here to buy an older ie second hand one that shipped with Cantelina, which since its a sizeable investment I am not that keen on. |

Re: Upgrade To Current Mac Pro 7.1
Catalina, not Cantelina.
And yes, you can run Catalina on a MP 7,1. It will come with Big Sur and you can roll it back to Catalina yourself. Make a bootable Catalina drive and away you go. DiskmakerX makes the process very simple. As mentioned above, Mojave is a no go as the MP 7,1 was released when Catalina was the current OS. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Upgrade To Current Mac Pro 7.1
If I were you I would wait for the entire Apple migration to the Silicon processors.
Rumors tell that during this new year Apple will release a desktop mid-size machine with Silicon

Re: Upgrade To Current Mac Pro 7.1
They're just rumors, and these in particular feel less reliable than most Mac rumors. It would be a great new model, but I'd be hesitant to count on its release any time soon.

Not interested in updating to Big Sur or M1.......
Is Avid going to release anything new at NAMM 2021 or nothing |

Re: Upgrade To Current Mac Pro 7.1
The 7.1 costs many thousands of bucks and in a couple of years it could become obsolete due to the processor family transition. I agree with you that rumors are just rumors but I would wait some months anyway. Machines with the M1X should be released this year
