^ Thanks.

However you know what, all? The more I read all this the more I am thinkng I should look into a very powerful PC Desktop. Either me putting it together (which I do NOT want, not that I can't) or buy it from somewhere else.

Is there a thread for a powerful PC discussion? :)

I think this is the fat of the PC-land:

(Could be wrong though, I'm not that deep into Windows anymore.)

But you know what's great about this? If you DO attempt your own CustoMac and decide it's not for you, you simply install a different OS on the hardware you've purchased. Specs would be the same regardless of the OS.

Smoking Apple you Will need about 7500 bucks

You'd be surprised at how much the price does not drop after the new generation comes out

2010 quads Can be had for about 1400-1600 bucks which is pretty cheap

(If you're okay with a 2010 computer having 2008 hardware specs)

No, No, No. To run dual procs you need e5 Xeons. Which can be found in 8-core variants. So 16-core, 32 virtual.

And yes I'd buy one today. I'm seriously temped to buy the current model.

Very good point. And another reason to just buy the Mac and get to work making $$.

A Mac will retain more of it's value for a long time.
A whack-o-mole will be worth pennies on the dollar by the time you get the drivers installed.

But that's just MHO, YMMV

The only item I did not understand from the above is when you wrote do not buy HDs or RAM from Apple. What do you mean? I am guessing for the RAM you mean, buy a device from apple that for example has 8 GB or RAM and then buy aftermarket DIMMs and install using the open slots? I know a lot about PCs but not Apple upgrades. What about the HDs? Buy HDs from where?
You will probably need to spend @ $3-4K on the MacPro and upgrades.
General rule with Apple, don't buy the cheapest or the most expensive, mid-level is usually where the best buy is (historically)

I would not buy the last gen. Wait for the new model, then spend as much as you can justify (remember, it's all a write-off to the IRS

Yes, buy HD's and RAM from 3rd party. The only way to go, and way cheaper.
Buy the least amount of RAM and 1 HD, whatever Apple will allow for the min on the config.

Crucial is great for both, RAM and SSD.
For HD's, I usually go with Amazon or New Egg, whoever is cheaper.
I like WD RE series. Worth the extra $ for the burn-in and warranty.

RAM should spec exactly as Apples states. HD's can be anything you want.

Still not anywhere close to as powerful as a 2nd gen i7 quad system you could build for maybe $700.

This is the resident Windows side for PC building: http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=238426

Either way... your best bet for a reliable desktop right now is building it yourself, whether for Windows or OSX. If you pay attention to the details, there's no reason your system will misbehave. There just isn't an "off the shelf" computer available right now that has nearly the bang for buck ratio you can get with a custom built machine. There are companies who make systems (Rain, Apple, etc) which work well out of the box, but will always pay close to double for them to assemble what you could build yourself.

If you still aren't comfortable building it yourself, I'm sure there are many who would build one for you. I would do it, but the shipping costs from up here wouldn't be worth it.

I imagine there are plenty of locals who are perfectly capable of building snazzy systems.
