Re: Why yes, this is the successful Hackintosh build thread!
^ Thanks.
However you know what, all? The more I read all this the more I am thinkng I should look into a very powerful PC Desktop. Either me putting it together (which I do NOT want, not that I can't) or buy it from somewhere else. Is there a thread for a powerful PC discussion? :) |

You'd be surprised at how much the price does not drop after the new generation comes out 2010 quads Can be had for about 1400-1600 bucks which is pretty cheap (If you're okay with a 2010 computer having 2008 hardware specs)

A Mac will retain more of it's value for a long time. A whack-o-mole will be worth pennies on the dollar by the time you get the drivers installed. But that's just MHO, YMMV kasper |

General rule with Apple, don't buy the cheapest or the most expensive, mid-level is usually where the best buy is (historically) I would not buy the last gen. Wait for the new model, then spend as much as you can justify (remember, it's all a write-off to the IRS Yes, buy HD's and RAM from 3rd party. The only way to go, and way cheaper. Buy the least amount of RAM and 1 HD, whatever Apple will allow for the min on the config. Crucial is great for both, RAM and SSD. For HD's, I usually go with Amazon or New Egg, whoever is cheaper. I like WD RE series. Worth the extra $ for the burn-in and warranty. RAM should spec exactly as Apples states. HD's can be anything you want. kasper |

Re: Why yes, this is the successful Hackintosh build thread!
Still not anywhere close to as powerful as a 2nd gen i7 quad system you could build for maybe $700.

Either way... your best bet for a reliable desktop right now is building it yourself, whether for Windows or OSX. If you pay attention to the details, there's no reason your system will misbehave. There just isn't an "off the shelf" computer available right now that has nearly the bang for buck ratio you can get with a custom built machine. There are companies who make systems (Rain, Apple, etc) which work well out of the box, but will always pay close to double for them to assemble what you could build yourself. If you still aren't comfortable building it yourself, I'm sure there are many who would build one for you. I would do it, but the shipping costs from up here wouldn't be worth it. I imagine there are plenty of locals who are perfectly capable of building snazzy systems.
