Default stereo pair mics

I want to buy a pair of stereo mics, and I'm looking for suggestions. I have a budget of around $300-$400. I can get an unmatched pair of AKG C1000S mics for $300, but curious about how well these will work for drum overheads, and stereo recording of acoustic instruments.

Although my main use for the new mics would be stereo pair recording, it would be nice to have them work well for single source recording as well. Any other low price mics that would fit this bill?

thanks in advance,
Dave Patterson

I use those for drum overheads. I don't think you'll beat 'em for the price.

Bassmac,

Thanks for the post. Have you used them for stereo recording other things, like acoustic guitar or piano? I've heard mix reviews of these, but they'd have to be a whole lot better than using two mismatched condensers or dynamic mics.

thanks,
Dave

During my cassette portastudio days, those WERE my hi-end mic’s. I used them for everything including vocals with great results - but no stereo recording.

My vote goes to the NT1 or a pair of Audio Technica 4041 mics.

Octava MC 012's. $150 a piece @ Guitar Center, although they are not a matched set. I believe that soundroom.com offers matched sets but for more money. Mine sound fine.

Just bought a Rode NT3 2 weeks ago. I love the sound of this mic. I will definetly buy a 2nd one later on for stereo. Also Ive heard of a couple of people who get good results with a pair of AKG C3000s.

I used to use 2 C1000S's as stereo overheads back when I use to run a mobile recording setup (with an Akai MG14D!!). They worked really well. A really good trick with these is that if you unscrew the mics and leave the diaphragm exposed (just handle it with care) you can use 'em as an AB stereo pair 'cos without the cover on, they become Omni directional. This, in the past has worked a treat for drums and just sound huge.

I have a pair of the Rode NT3's. They work great for drum overheads, etc.. and they are built like tanks. They have replaced my SM81 pair for overheads and my 4050s for recording
classical chamber ensembles (live concerts).
