Re: using Two Carbons together ?

Also I have seen plenty used Carbon's on Reverb for around $2K (hardware only, no PT License), That's a hell of a lot cheaper then a $3K Carbon Pre. Plus you can still use it on its own if you ever need a secondary rig. |

Re: using Two Carbons together ?
I picked up a 2nd Carbon for under $2k. I use it in "Pre Mode" often. It works perfectly! Just did a sudo on-location setup. 24 channels. 2 Carbon and a Heritage Super 8 via ADAT @ 96k. You can go 44/48 and get another 8 channels if you really need it.
I've also used the configuration to get the extra 8 line outputs into a summing mixer. The monitor section is indeed disabled. Also no ADAT unless your standalone. Pretty versatile! AND it's a spare fully functioning Carbon if the need arises. Redundancy is nice to have sometimes. |

Re: using Two Carbons together ?
So will Carbon in Pre mode work standalone like an 8 channel ADAT preamp now?

Re: using Two Carbons together ?
To follow on - here’s what I’ve got with setup w 2 carbons and a prep. One carbon has been booted as a pre, so it’s just that. I interface w an API 1608 so interested in the i/o for functionality. It is an expensive way (both $$ and RU) to get essentially 26x24 ADDA (not including the ADAT, which I’m not using)
24 analog I/o via 3x 8ch I/O DB25 across the 3 units ADAT I/O 2 Ch master out (from the single booted Carbon) 4 HP out (from the single booted Carbon unit) 8 DSP - I have not confirmed that but everything I’ve read / experienced seems so. It’s operating as a strong, bulletproof interface for ProTools that takes advantage of the low latency for tracking. But I had the luxury of a second carbon around. Not sure I would start w this solution but it’s def working fine. |

Re: using Two Carbons together ?
I initially regretted my decision to go Carbon. I did get a good deal on it used, which drove my decision to go this route but it was a commitment!
I really wanted and probably should have gone the Dante route for more interoperability but this setup has been rock solid! I've worked out how to make it flexible for the kind of work I do. Having the 2nd Carbon to use as a main or a Pre is what changed my opinion about the whole thing. I do a lot of remote work, so having to rack/un-rack my main interface every time is a pain. Now I have one that lives with my HA Super8 via ADAT and if I need more I/O I drag out the other Carbon and it's as simple as plugging in an ethernet cable and changing modes. I've also got some nice boutique 500 series pre's I can integrate or to just add more I/O. Flexibility is the name of the game for me. |
