Spinning beach ball for over a minute when separating regions in PT8

Every time I hit the "B" key on my keyboard to separate a region in PT8 the spinning beach ball comes up and stays for over a minute, sometimes more.

Then sometimes (but not always) I will get an error message saying..

"Could not complete the separate region command because Assertion in "/Volumes/Development/vb_link?AlturaPorts/NewFileLibs?FileFormat/MacBuild?>>/>>/FF/Audio/Elastic/FF_PacketStream.cpp", line 3085.

Anyone have any ideas?

What have you tried?
Trash your databases and preferences with the handy app at the top of this forum (sticky). This clears up a lot of weird behavior. SB

Thanks for the reply post BaileyBass. I do use the PT prefs cleaner app, almost every time before I open Pro Tools at this point (no reason, just major OCD), so that's not the problem. I'm wondering if there's a CS update I need to install.

cs2 is the latest for PT8

under preferences/editing have you got ticked "separate regions" operate on all related tracks? this will make cuts on all regions and will soon fill your regions bin with zillions of regions causing PT to slow.

you might need to go to the regions list menu (the small pull-down arrow) and under the select tab, select unused regions! then select clear selected. this will clear all the zillions of unused files.

Is your hard drive OK? Is there plenty of free space? on big session you'll need something like a minimum of 60-80 gig free.

Do you have elastic audio on all tracks?
how many tracks are you editing at once?
how many tracks in the session?
internal or external hard drive?

I get the same spinning beachball problem but when I press the ctrl key to use the scrub tool.

I was just going to post this. This problem is driving me nuts. For post production, having it slow down every time I separate a region is adding major time to my sessions. Not a big deal when clients pay by hour but for "package" deals....
