Default MIDI controller to PT-8 - USB or MIDI cable?

I'd like to use my recently acquired MIDIman USB Keystation MIDI controler with Pro Tools 8 and 003 on my iMac. The Keystation manual says connect it with USB directly to the computer but the Pro Tools and 003 manuals say connect it to the 003 interface with 5 pin MIDI cable.

The tech savvy guy who sold me Pro Tools says connect with USB to my iMac.

I'm confused. Please advise.

Assuming your keyboard or midi controller has both... USB and midi 5-pin classic conectors.

For Windows there is a Free App that allows to test Midi performance,
Measures jitter, latency & deviation....

Miditest v4.12 can be used in OSX with PlayOnMac + latest Wine

My guess... If using a different port, could give better results...
003 FireWire port does not overload,
Unless Midiman USB drivers are very bad...

Another test....
Load a .midi and use internal synths, and external synths...
hear, then Test the other interface... Same settings...
The one that feels right/tighter, is the one.

When I tested OSX Snow Leopard, had 1ms jitter, 1ms latency, 1ms deviation...
With an RME hdsp9632/AIO.

If you have too much external synths... Is better to have different Midi ports, instead of daisy chain Through, a single Midi port.
But that depends how good the drivers are.

If you want flawless MIDi, you can use rptMIDI / ipMIDI, connect your iMac with a CAT6 cable to an old WindowsXP machine that has Game port + an original Game Port to Midi cable "sealed with Opto couplers." has 0.2ms jitter = flawless.

The manuals for each are written without knowing what else may be in your system. That means the keyboard manual was probably written assuming no other hardware is in your system and vice versa for the 003. Being you also have the 003 I'd go with what the manual says and connect via 5 pin MIDI cable. What I call hybrid systems (USB MIDI and 5 pin MIDI) don't always play well.

The above blather means NOTHING to this thread.

USB would be my first try as well. You should remember that back when the 003 and LE8 were released, USB-midi was not very widely used. Now its sometimes tough to find a device that still has regular midi connections. There are also other options, but you should be covered with what you have, so connect the USB and open the midi studio setup and enable the routing
