Default Re: scsi or ide? 32 tracks eats my power....

I don't have a PT setup yet, so I can't answer as it directly pertains to Protools. However, I can answer as it pertains to computers in general. With SCSI devices, the processing of device access and management is done on the SCSI controller card. With IDE it's done from the CPU.

So, heavy i/o based applications (i.e. audio) is going to significantly tax the CPU with IDE. With SCSI, the i/o proccessing is going to happen on the SCSI controller card. Therefore, you won't see a very heavy hit to the CPU if any.

I hope that helps.

what kind of computer are you using? You should definitely see an increase in performance going SCSI.

Best performance will be when using a second internal ATA/IDE drive for audio.

I'm using a second IDE drive for audio. It's an IBM Deskstar 7200 45gig. I also have a SCSI card, Adaptec 2930.
Looking at Tlester and Where's comments, does this mean that if I use a SCSI drive instead of the IDE for audio, I will actually get better performance, more plugs etc., because there is less of a load on the CPU? Could this be a cheap way of upgrading my system???

Default scsi or ide? 32 tracks eats my power....

hi

i have been using this new 32 track pt, but with plugins it´s going a bit slow when using plugins (cpu load is in the middle of the meter). is there any difference (better performance), when using scsi? i have a basic ibm hd (2x) and i´m thinking to purchase a scsi hd and card if that´s better.. is it worth of extra money? thanks and all the best.

i´m using g4/400mhz/512mb system with os 9.2.2.

1 hd for system folders
1 hd for audio
1 fw hd for backups and moving files

i have problems when using logic with 40-> tracks. and pt with 32 tracks. it´s getting slow, when editing.

i was recording with g4/800mhz (with 32 pt) and fw hd at the weekend. same thing as with my own computer. slow editing... i think i should try scsi!

A FRIEND OF MINE HAVE THE EXACT SAME COMPUTER AS I DO BUT,ADDED A ATTO SCSI CARD & 9.GB CHEETAH DRIVE(SCSI). I LOADED ONE OF HIS SESSIONS ONTO MY 80.GB IDE DRIVE AND MY SYSTEM PERFORMANCE WAS SLOW,WHEREAS HIS SYSTEM PERFORMANCE RIPPED THRU THE SEESION WITHOUT SLOWING WHATSOEVER. I'VE SEEN THE DIFFERENCE & I AM CURRENTLY MAKING THE SWITCH .....MY 2 CENTS!!!!!
(PS: BOOTH MACS EXTENTIONS,OS,PT LE VERSIONS WERE EXACTLY THE SAME)

G4 733 (QUICKSILVER)
1.GB RAM
40.GB IBM (SYSTEM)
80.GB IBM(AUDIO) PARTITIONED IN HALF*INTERNAL*
60.GB FW (AUDIO) PARTITIONED IN HALF
30.GB IBM(BACK-UP ONLY)*INTERNAL*
9.2.2 OS
5.2.1 32TRACK BETA

Vonbleak, does this actually mean that, for whatever reason, you can significantly improve the overall performance with a SCSI drive? Does it take a load off the CPU, which might mean more plugs availble, or does it just get the data around quicker, which might mean more tracks???
