Default Double Compression

Just wondering if anyone remembers or has heard of double compression. I believe it requires two channels (one highly compressed) then the output is fed into a copy of the original signal and compressed again. Is that it or is there one more step that I am talking about?
Thanks
Zach

I've been known to use Smack's "Tape" setting as the first plug, then EQ, then another compressor on guitars and vocals. The Tape setting seems to slow down the transients and warm up the sound a little with out sounding really compressed. Then I like to EQ before a heavier compressor to keep unwanted frequencies from triggering the compressor. However I'm not an engineer and just going with what I like. As far as the two track method, I've heard of drum sub mixes being compressed hard with an aux send and then blending it with the regular mix. But I've never done it. I read about it in some magazine that was doing an article on how to achieve a sound like John Bohnam's drum sound. They also used the compressed mix for verb and maybe delay. But I was just reading this in a store and didn't bother to purchase the magazine.

Whoa that's a lot of info. I knew I don't know anything about recording and that just proved it. Especially this article on multi-buss compression mixing. The writer mentions that with the boom of home studios we have lost the apprenticeship of engineering. And I would have to agree thankfully there's places like this and others that can give us the cliffnotes until we have a better grasp on what we are doing.

Agreed... but I'm only the messenger boy.

Ummm... I did like the chapter on "Cracking Compressors" from Michael Stavrou's book Mixing with your mind very insightful.
