Least Expensive was to get into TDM
Good evening, ladies & gentlemen! I don't want to get laughed at too hard by asking this question, BUT ... can anybody tell me what the least expensive route to TDM would be? I currently have PTLE with a Digi002. although I love using ProTools, I must say that I am convinced that the only way I will be able to reach my recording goal I will have to enter the realm of the ProTools .... but the real deal! You see, when I use too many plugins with PTLE, everything crashes ... every time! It is becoming very frustrating! Thanks in advance for your input! Take care!

Re: Least Expensive was to get into TDM
a d24 and dsp farm combo. 500 bucks maybe? an 888/24 or adat bridge if you already have a lighpipe converter. 500-700 for the interface. if you dont care about a/d or if by chance you have a decent 24 bit convertere on aes/ebu or spdif, then pick an 18 bit 888 for 200-300 bucks. if you really dont give a [bleep] about conversion then get an 882 or 882/20 for 100-200
I'd say 1000 for the whole thing. then, you can add either a mix farm card to the d/24 and dsp farm combo for 800-1000 bucks and you have a decent Mix system. the d24 system can also have another d24 card or Mix I/o card added for 64 tracks instead of the single d24's 32 tracks. the legacy dsp farm cards are anywhere from 200-400 bucks and 7 slot chassis being 200-300 bucks, the system is totaly expandable. with GOOD a/d and d/a with a 24 bit adat bridge, your golden. I have a d24, mix i/o card, and 5 dsp farms in a seven slot chassis. I have 4 interfaces: 2 on the d24 and 2 on the Mix I/O. plan on running os9 though. I used to have a digi001 and I had the same problems you have trying to run a full production. host just aint setup for it yet in my opinion and who knows if it'll ever be good enough. |

Re: Least Expensive was to get into TDM
Really, only $1000? I'll have to do some checking on those prices. I already have a Rosetta, so would I only need a d24, dsp farm and 882 (or should I get the ADAT bridge?). If I can move from an 001 to Mix for around a grand that would be amazing!

Re: Least Expensive was to get into TDM
You can do it for about $1000.00. I have an HD3 rig and was in need of a second rig for an editing/overdub room. I was able to get a D24, vintage farm, 882/20, 1622, and adat bridge for 1200.00. Keep an eye on Ebay or the DUC buy/sell forum. Adat bridge prices have actually gone up pretty high lately (600.00+). So that interface may not be an option. But a vintage 888 has great digital i/o options and should sound fine. Especially if you clock it to your Rosetta. The systems are out there. Just realize you will be dead ended with the kind of computer you can use (G4 or lower only), OS options, and plugin support. That being said, I would expect you could still get many years of quality use from a D24 system. If you need more than 32 tracks add a mix farm. That will bring the price up another 800.00 and give you 64 tracks. But still a drop in the bucket compared to prices of original TDM systems. I still do all my tracking on the HD system. There is nothing like a true TDM system when it's time to do vox comps or drum edits. And the D24 system handles this job perfectly. No native system can keep up when you have 32+ tracks with 4-6 edits per measure. That kind of editing still bogs down a G5 002 system to a crawl. But not TDM! Plus I love the fact that I can use my Lexiverb again! When you are looking for a computer you may want to consider a 9600 with 6 PCI slots. They can easily be upgraded and I've seen them as cheap as $80.00. It will save you the need to get an expansion chassis if you add more cards. If you go the G4 route make sure the cards are G4 compatible. There are a ton of things to consider when you build a vintage system like this. Firewire vs. SCSI. Sample rate needs (You are limited to 24bit 48khz with a vintage system). How to expand if needed (chassis vs. 9600).etc.. One of the cool things about the system is that I only have a single 192 i/o for the HD3 rig and the vintage i/o that I bought for the D24 rig works with the HD3 to give a bunch more i/o for headphone mixes, stem mixes, etc.. Good luck!

Re: Least Expensive was to get into TDM
I started with a d24, a dsp farm, and an 882. You could pull that off pretty cheaply. I eventually added 2 mix farms, and 3 888/24's. I'm running this on a G4 1.25 GHz, and can use a lot of plug-in's happily. It's a great system. If you start as I did, you can build this system up into something pretty awesome. Next up for me is better converters and clocking.

Re: Least Expensive was to get into TDM
I'd do the adat bridge 24 (make sure it's a 24 bit version) and not an 882 cause the 882 doesnt pass 24 bit digitally. the 888 (18 bit version) passes 24 bit digitally via the digital ins and outs. the 24 bit adat bridge has 16 adat ins and outs and even a stereo pair of analog d/a
upgrading to 64 tracks can be done via a 200 dollar mix i/o card but it doesnt give you more dsp chips. if I were you I would pick up a d24, a mix farm, a dsp farm, and an 888 (18 bit) total price? maybe 2k tops. and from there, get a pci expansion chassis for 300 bucks and start adding dsp farm cards. oh, kenny gioia has a mix core and mix farm card (Mix Plus) available for sale as well as a 1622 interface. he'd make ya a deal i am sure. |

<<if I were you I would pick up a d24, a mix farm, a dsp farm, and an 888 (18 bit)>>
Does this mean that I would not have to get an ADAT bridge? I DO need 64 tracks (that's the primary reason i am considering the upgrade) so I guess I should add the mix I/O to that list. Also, please clarify, is it true this system will not run on a G5? Is the latest version I can run 6.4? Thanks for helping me figure this all out!

Re: Least Expensive was to get into TDM
You only need an adat bridge 24 if you need adat lightpipe i/o
if you want to run this setup on OSX I would skip the d24 and go mix core. but mix systems are dead at 10.3 so just stay at os9 with a d24 otherwise just go HD.the d24 is supported up to 6.1 the d24 and mix i/o combo isnt a mix system like a d24 and mix farm would be so you cant do surround sound and it lacks some other things thta are MIX system exclusive. d24 and mix systems arent compatible with g5's. get the dual boot 1.25 MDD system or preferably a quicksilver g4, you dont need all that host power for TDM though you might use a lot of RTAS like I do but I still use a quicksilver 867mhz on os9 |

Re: Least Expensive was to get into TDM
The Mix farm card (or mix core) is what's required for the 64 voice engine.
