Default Fast Track Solo

Okay, so I am using an older Fast Track Solo with Pro Tools Express 10.3.4 on an older Mac Mini still using 10.11.6 OS X El Capitan.

I felt like my mic input might be going bad because it wasn't getting a great signal. I had both pro tools and garageband open, and I plugged in another fast track solo that my friend had. I was just trying to test out the mic input, and something popped up (on Garageband) asking if I wanted to change it, so I said yes.

There was no sound when I played it. No sound on the new Fast Track so I chalked it up, and went back to my old one.

Now there is no sound on that one?

Is there anyway to fix this? I've read that it might be the drivers, but it was working fine just two hours ago, so why would that be the issue?

I've restarted and tried to do things of that nature.

Any idea how I can fix this?

And yes, I know I am on a dated system, an old version of PT, and an old interface, but I have been using it like this for 10 years and I like the setup.

Any help would be awesome.

Thanks!

update

okay so now I am even more mind blown

So I pulled out my laptop, and it has the same pro tools express, and I use the same Fast Track Solo on it, and now it doesn't work either...

So it can't be the drivers.

But how did an interface like this just stop working?

Pro Tools works, it opens, and I can edit, and it plays, but there is no sound.

My mind is blown.

Reboot Mac. hold down the (N) key while starting up pro Tools then it should give you an option to select sound device.

But first make sure the mic is working first on a mixer and if the mic is good and cord.

Just my 2 cents, but I would use any excuse to buy another brand of interface

Avid's MAudio experiment of chasing the low-end consumer market largely produced junk audio interfaces and that era also produced some awful software as well. So like Dave I would unfortunately aiming this stuff at the trash can.

And nobody here can guess what popup messages etc. you saw, if you cannot tell us.

And this laptop is a Mac? What exact model/specs? Running what OS? And for that matter, what exact model/specs is the other Mac?

The saving grace with the interface you have is it is USB audio class compliant, so should just work and does not need additional drivers. You can test the interface works from the Mac, just set it as the audio output and input using Audio MIDI Setup.app and Play with it in different apps. If it works there it should work in your DAWs.

You probably should have one interface dedicated to each DAW and even better only one DAW running at a time. I would be a little suspect about how well multi-client audio works with these boxes (but by all means test that, maybe you already have).

You likely should upgrade, there are no-end of great audio interfaces available from Focusrite, Presonus, Motu, RME, UAD, etc. there is no need to have an interface from Avid with modern Pro Tools. If these interfaces require drivers make sure they support the macOS versions your Mac can run. And ideally you can upgrade the macOS and run free Pro Tools Intro... that is likely better than ancient Pro Tools Express.
