PT 12.4 Track Commit / re-naming bug
There is apparently a bug when trying to rename committed tracks to their deleted source tracks' names. I select the delete source track option in the commit track pop up window and render the tracks. Now in theory, it should be possible to delete the .cm track name extensions from all the tracks (getting the original names back), since the source tracks have been deleted. However I get the 'There is already a track / playlist with this name etc' prompt. Only after closing the season and re-opening it again is renaming possible. I have tried this on different set-ups running PT 12.4 and the result is the same.

Re: PT 12.4 Track Commit / re-naming bug
I think it has something to do with being able to "Undo" the commit. Pro Tools track commit is added to the undo queue so you can revert. Makes sense why it would work after closing and reopening the session.
That being said, I think it would be nice if PT, instead of adding .cm to the track name, that it add ".orig" to the source track name. Or, at least give you the option. A temporary fix though, just add a space ("guitar" to "guitar ") after the name when you're renaming the committed tracks. Pro tools will accept that.

Re: PT 12.4 Track Commit / re-naming bug
That sounds like a reasonable explanation. Although I understand the need for an undo option this is rather inelegant and confusing - it definitely feels like a bug to the user. I use 'commit' as a final step before exporting my session as an AAF (film post). This way I get all my fades and cross fades rendered as the AAF format does not support fade files. When exporting the AAF to other people (clients) I need the track names to be as precise and short as possible. Having to remove the .cm extension on up to hundreds of tracks is a bit tiresome to say the least. Having the option of renaming the original tracks (e.g. .orig) would be great.

Re: PT 12.4 Track Commit / re-naming bug
Yeah I hear ya! Being able to customize the commit track naming system would be huge. Major time saver.
It's too bad you can't do a batch rename in Pro Tools. You could batch edit with the audio files, but that's still an extra step.

Hey strangepumpkin. Exactly what do you mean by 'batch edit with the audio files'?

Re: PT 12.4 Track Commit / re-naming bug
There's an application called "A Better Finder Renamer" and it allows one to rename a large group of files based on a certain criteria. So for instance, if you had 200 files with ".cm" in the file name that you wanted to remove, you could use this application and it would remove the ".cm" from all the filenames with one click.
But it won't work for track names in pro tools. It has to be files outside of the program.

Re: PT 12.4 Track Commit / re-naming bug
Yeah, it's the track names I need renamed. Also if one wanted to rename all audio files with a batch rename software like the on you mention (or Name Mangler or any other) PT wouldn't be able to link up to the audio files afterwards. There is definitely room for improvements in PT.

Re: PT 12.4 Track Commit / re-naming bug
No, absolutely. Renaming the audio files outside of pro tools would break the links. That's why I was saying it would be nice if you "could" batch edit in pro tools.
